Romano: Two defenders discussed in Milan-Newcastle talks but not Tomori

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan and Newcastle United were in talks yesterday and two players came up during the discussions, Fabrizio Romano claims, and Fikayo Tomori was not one of them.

According to the latest from Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle and Milan were ‘in contact’ on Wednesday to discuss possible opportunities and there were two defenders that seemed to emerge in the talks.

However, Tomori was not one of them despite the reports circulating claiming that the Englishman is a target for the Magpies. Instead, Newcastle are showing interest in Malick Thiaw, but he is considered an ‘important part of Milan’s project’.

Kieran Trippier was also discussed but there is ‘nothing concrete’ on that front regarding Milan and the full-back, who is currently at the European Championship with England and can play on either side.

A few days ago, the source that broke the Tomori-Newcastle story reported that the player is not keen on the idea of joining them either and instead wants to remain with Milan, who can offer him Champions League football and with whom he has another three years on his deal.

As for Thiaw, he had a difficult season due to suffering a serious injury in the winter and was shaky when he returned, but he was excellent in 2022-23 and will get a clean slate under Paulo Fonseca.

The link to Trippier – given Milan are searching for a new right-back who can get forward a bit more that Davide Calabria – is perhaps not surprising.

  1. Trippier isn’t a young talent but depending on fee /wages would tick a lot of boxes. He also showed in his time at Atletico it doesn’t take him long to adapt to new culture or league.

As a rotation option with Calabria that’s pretty decent. But I can see Newcastle asking for a fee north of €15mn, similar to Napoli and DiLorenzo

    1. Regarding Trippier, in God’s name why would we be looking at a 33 year old player who is in physical decline as a RB if we want to upgrade, we need a player that will give us at least 5 seasons of good and consistent performance, are we now a garbage bin…?
Their are tonnes of players we could get, then with regards to Thiaw, it’s a very bad idea, and it shows we are not a serious club if we sell him, that means any team can come and derail our project at anytime once they flash money, he is a future asset for this team.

        1. Thiaw is coming of an injury laden season. He clearly did not reach match fitness throughout the campaign. He’s a much better CB than basically all of them besides Tomori at this point. This is why people who don’t watch the squad play should just keep quiet. How do you think Thiaw became a full German international as well as the captain of their U/21 team. This is the embarrassing fans we have now. Jesus Christ

          1. Thiaw lacks brainpower & that became quite blatant. He doesn’t offer much in other areas to compensate his lack of intelligence on the pitch. Slow & dull.

  2. Thiaw should stay, he is young and has potential. I honestly believe that he could become a van dijk in the future. Just a side note because many people here don’t understand football. Defenders usually start performing best after the age 24-25 and Thiaw is only 22.

    1. I’m with you. He showed promised on his first season. Then last season he struggle with injuries. Plus, our midfield left our CBs exposed quite a lot. It’s no surprise our defense was awesome when we had a proper DM (Kessie). We have struggle ever since.
Lastly, he is 22… geez people. some people want to field all young guys and expect 0 errors. Let’s see how he does this season.
Same would apply to Musah. Another guy who is 21 and like all 22-21yrs olds, they are idiots and will have growing pains.
