RR: A familiar tale – how Milan lost Kone to Monchengladbach in 2021

By Ben Dixon -

Earlier today, it was reported that AC Milan had re-lit an old spark in the shape of Manu Kone, but the story of why they lost the player three summers ago is a tale all too familiar.

The mercato is a difficult game, one that requires speed but skill, and there are questions about Milan in both senses, that are heightened currently.

Giorgio Furlani spoke about a lack of panic among the management yesterday, but questions have already arisen about whether this is a correct feeling, given there are several operations that need to be completed in just over a month.

The Rossoneri have secured one signing – Alvaro Morata for €13 million – but there is a growing urgency among the fanbase for other additions to be finalised, given they are close to several targets. However, being close does not guarantee a Diavolo future for the player.

Across the transfer board, the reason for the ‘delays’ – if we can call them that – is due to finances, and the best example of this is the pause on Youssouf Fofana’s move, with AS Monaco wanting significantly more than what is currently being offered by Milan.

Today, news broke that the Rossoneri are interested in Manu Kone, who could be an alternative option to the French midfielder, and it is not their first encounter with the now Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.

As Radio Rossonera recalls, in the summer of 2021 the Diavolo were in talks to sign the young midfielder, but they did not close a €4 million gap in negotiations, and the German outfit swooped in and landed the player.

Therefore, there could be a beautiful irony in this summer’s mercato if a financial disparity caused another change in the club’s plans that led to them re-lighting an old spark.

  1. That 15 saved on Kessie’s agent, 30 to 40 on wages, plus having to buy even more midfielder
by selling Tonalo ended up costing us more in the end. All because they are cheap and don’t want to move away from their set parameters. Our midfield is not more complete than it was before to add insult to injury.Add to that they made a profit two years running. Incompetence at it’s finest.

  2. You’d rather Tonali stayed and got banned for most of the season than sell him and get multiple players for that money ?

    1. RLC was already in the budget so yes. Kessie + Tonali out for a year is better than Reijnders and Musah. The mgmt aren’t spending now because the midfield is overcrowded and because they are cheap. So we’d be in the same boat with tonali and without reijnders and musah.
Tonali was 70mill sale? Reijnders,Musah Chukwueze were around that.

They are average at best and we overpaid for all 3.
Had tonali actually been replaced properly this wouldn’t be an issue

And yes would rather Tonali and an actual #6 being bought this year. The double pivot would be set and we’d getting more profiles we need and not the likes of reijnders and musah or whatever usmnt player the management “likes”.

Is it too difficult to admit the management makes mistake after mistake?

  3. Maldini wanted to sign Kone for 10M – but Elliot only authorized 8M and we of course lost out.

Now the brilliant idea is to spend 30-40M for him when he’s still under contract until 2026??

Hahahahaha! Ya sure. We can’t spend 20M on Fofana but we’re gonna spend more than that on Konè???

Oh ya I can see this one happening for sure! 😂🤡

  4. Just increase the offer near to what Monaco asked for Fofana.
We really need a DM and we have spent months trying to get Fofana.

  5. 4m gap in negotiation 3yrs ago, same thing they’re doing with main target players now .m

If you can close dealmcuz of 4million when the player was younger and haven’t established himself. I think they will be paying double the price by now.

    Sesko
    Openda
    Olmo
    Thurman
Laturo Martinez and other would have been Milan players by now are very cheaper costz then compare to what their selling price are today.

Agreeing deal with players on salary and The waiting game dont work all the time.

The management need to step up
