RR: Pioli left irritated by a comment from Gasperini – the background

Stefano Pioli was left irritated by a comment from Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini about penalty decisions after the Serie A clash between La Dea and AC Milan on Sunday night.

As has been reported by Radio Rossonera, some of Gasperini’s comments about the penalty decision that saw Teun Koopmeiners make it 1-1 at San Siro have angered Pioli.

Milan had gone 1-0 up thanks to a wonderful goal from Rafael Leao early on, but Atalanta were awarded a penalty after Olivier Giroud was adjudged to have kicked Emil Holm in the box as the defender went for a header.

Pioli spoke to the press after the match and said that the penalty was ‘soft’, whilst Gasperini said: “I have never been in favour of this type of penalty, but they have become frequent.”

Speaking to DAZN, he then also added: “We’ve got credit with Milan when it comes to penalties, so it turned our way this time,” suggesting that Atalanta have been wronged against Milan in the past.

These words were then put to Pioli and his response was: “Things like this bother me so much.”

That proved to be the last major action of the game which fizzled out in the second half.
