Sacchi sees ‘revival’ in Italian football and believes Milan can compete against anyone

Arrigo Sacci believes that AC Milan can compete against anyone in the Champions League having reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

Milan booked their place in the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2011-12 season thanks to a 1-0 aggregate victory against Tottenham, with Brahim Diaz getting the only goal of the tie early in the first leg at San Siro.

Of course some daunting prospects await in the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and possible Manchester City too, but sides will not celebrate when draw against the Rossoneri having seen how well they defended against a supposedly world class attacking trio in Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Dejan Kulusevski.

Interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sacchi spoke about the Rossoneri’s run to the final eight of European club football’s top competition, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“In general, however, I see a revival in Italian football. Let me explain: we have three teams in the Champions League, one of which has already qualified for the quarter-finals. Well, of these three teams, at least two are strategic and not tactical in their approach and way of playing,” he began.

“I’m referring to Napoli, who are doing extraordinary things both in Italy and in Europe, and Milan, who didn’t barricade themselves in the box in London, and had four or five scoring chances in the second half. We are also understanding that gambling pays off, and above all it doesn’t cost.

“PSG have many champions and loses because they are not a collective. Now I hope that Inter will demonstrate that they are a collective in Porto and not go onto the pitch just to wait for the opponent’s mistake. Italy can take three teams to the quarter-finals, it would be a great result and then we can play against all of them. Especially Napoli and Milan.”
