‘The feat is within reach’ – Sacchi explains why Milan’s Scudetto dream remains alive

Arrigo Sacchi has admitted that AC Milan have a lot of ground to make up still in order to catch Inter, but they must keep believing.

Milan beat Inter in the derby at the weekend to close the gap from 10 to seven points, but the feeling is that it could be a case of too little too late after previous dropped points along the way which allowed the Nerazzurri to build such a comfortable cushion.

Nonetheless, the Rossoneri must keep winning in order to be ready for if there is a slip-up from Cristian Chivu’s side. This weekend could be a potential turning point, with Inter hosting Atalanta while Milan travel to the capital to face a Lazio side under real pressure.

Arrigo Sacchi’s analysis

Sacchi spoke during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport and he assessed where the title race now stands after the derby result on Sunday night, with Arrigo Sacchi relaying his words.

“Milan have the chance to fully get back in the Scudetto race and even win it. They have a very solid team structure, and the derby victory has certainly boosted enthusiasm throughout the club,” he began.

“Of course, seven points is a lot to make up: three games are needed, and it’s not easy because the Rossoneri would have to win them all and Inter would have to earn just one point. However, the feat is within the reach of Allegri’s team.

“Inter have only one duty: to score points and maintain the gap. The Scudetto is the only remaining objective, and so the Nerazzurri will give their all to get there. However, I confess that I’ve seen them in a slight decline compared to other periods of the season.

“Perhaps it’s due to absences, or perhaps they’re less determined and effective than before. For this reason, they must be careful: it takes a moment to fall into a negative streak, and then recovering from it becomes a problem.

“The player who can help Inter on their way to the Scudetto is definitely Lautaro. Of the four forwards, he’s the best, and he’s also the captain, a dressing room man who’s listened to and respected. I expect something more from Barella, who doesn’t seem to be in top form.

“I have no doubts about Milan: the key player is Modric, he’s the one who keeps the team going and leads the way. If his physique supports him – and I don’t see why he should betray him now – I think his contribution will be crucial. And if Leao wakes up and starts to have the consistency he’s lacked so far, then the Scudetto race isn’t over.”
