MN: Saelemaekers, Messias and Castillejo fighting for a spot – only one should remain in 2022-23

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has found himself with a lock to unpick with regards to the right wing position as none of the options have convinced recently.

MilanNews recalls how the hierarchies on the right flank have changed in recent months as Alexis Saelemaekers held the role of starter for some time but Pioli instead has gone for Junior Messias over the Belgian since the turn of the year, with Samu Castillejo completely gone from the radar.

Saelemaekers’ season has taken a bad turn and he has not started a game since 5 February 2022 against Inter when he was replaced at half time, while Castillejo hasn’t played even a minute since 19 December when the Rossoneri lost 1-0 against Napoli.

In view of next season, it is clear to everyone that one of the roles in which Milan will have to strengthen is that of the right side with most popular names at the moment being those of Marco Asensio of Real Madrid and Domenico Berardi of Sassuolo.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are looking through the potential names but the feeling is that out of Saelemaekers, Messias and Castillejo, only one will remain with the Rossoneri next season.
