AC Milan were planning to build a new stadium in San Donato, but they eventually opted to move into a new San Siro with Inter.
There were months of talk about the next home of Milan, and it seemed like the two Milanese clubs would split. Indeed, the Rossoneri were more than considering the San Donato plan, and work had begun on the area.

However, the cost of the stadium, partnered with other issues, meant that the Diavolo chose to build a new San Siro with Inter.
They were not completely against a future in San Donato, though, and there was talk of a ‘San Donato clause’ being inserted into the deal. Though it was quickly rejected, all roads lead to the new shared project.
San Donato fines
This decision is not without a consequence, though, and the municipality of San Donato are now requesting a reimbursement of €74,360 for ‘costs incurred by the local authority’, as Il Giornale, via Calciomercato.com, reports. This includes the costs for consultancy, in-depth analysis, and the technical and bureaucratic procedures for the review of the project.
There may still be use for the land in San Donato, with the NBA Europe stadium perhaps being located there. However, it would certainly not be the 70,000-seat arena initially planned…
I would have thought the new NBA team has a brand new arena to use from the Ice Hockey stadium just built for the winter Olympics.
San Donato was the biggest bluff to force Sala to sell the San Siro ever. Well worth it really.
Wish we went for the SS alone and sold San Donato to Inter instead though. The thought of sharing earnings with that club just feels wrong.
