San Donato councillor gives update on Milan’s project and confirms 2028 aim

By Oliver Fisher -

Massimiliano Mistretta, the Councillor for Public Works and Mobility for San Donato, has spoken about a number of different topics connected to AC Milan’s plan to build a new stadium in the area.

It has now been made public knowledge that Milan want to build their new stadium in San Donato Milanese on the San Francesco site, and that they wish aim to play their first official match at the start of the 2028-29 season.

Obviously there is no shortage of controversy about this project, with opposition from local residents and environmentalists, but given that the club have bought the Sportlifecity project – which had a pre-agreed sporting plan – it will largely come down to approval from the Council.

In the last few hours, Mistretta spoke at at MF Real Estate Week and tried to shed some light on where things are at with the new stadiu, especially on some hot topics such as roads, parking and public order.

Mistretta first of all explained what stage Milan’s project is at and what the next steps will be, with the comments relayed by Calcio e Finanza.

“The administration of the Council of San Donato must carefully evaluate the Milan stadium project in the San Francesco area. On 27 September the Rossoneri club presented the proposal, now the technical offices are carrying out a regulatory assessment to understand if and when to start the preliminary investigation process,” he said.

“I would therefore say that we are still in a preliminary phase. Once this step has been passed, we will enter a more political evaluation phase regarding the project and its repercussions. Concerns about the aquifer, under the soil of Milan? It has no impact on the stadium or the construction. Also because the car parks will be built on the surface and will not impact the groundwater.”

An issue that worries residents greatly is undoubtedly that of traffic, something which Mistretta responded to.

“It is the aspect linked to the Milan stadium project in the municipality of San Donato that worries citizens the most. The challenge will be to guarantee as much as possible that San Donato is not invaded by cars,” he said.

“The places and car parks foreseen by the project are currently over five thousand, including cars and motorbikes. But there are other car parks, on the outskirts of San Donato, and also other areas that can contribute to creating a response.”

The Mayor of Milano, Giuseppe Sala, expressed his doubts about the project in particular regarding the issue of public order.

Here is Massimiliano Mistretta’s response: “As Assago does with the Forum, there is the possibility of making agreements with Milan to guarantee a presence of law enforcement agencies, following usual practices.”

Finally, regarding the timing , the councillor declared: “It is probable that in 2028 the starting whistle of the season for Milan will be in San Donato. We believe that the strength of the project and the size of the investment will ensure that the responses to the fears are effective.

“If this does not happen, it is clear that the starting whistle of the 2028-29 season will not be in San Donato.”
