AC Milan are focused on the new San Siro, but it will also involve the demolition of the old stadium, which is appreciated across the world.
There can be no denying it, San Siro is one of the most iconic venues in the world. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, you know or have seen the stadium. It’s recognisable to everyone and that is why Foster+Partners and Manica are keen to keep some of its features for the new San Siro.

Unfortunately, it will not be feasible to remain as it is with the new stadium in operation and this morning, MilanVibes has relayed information from Corriere della Sera this morning about the demolition of the old San Siro.
The four phases of demolition
The demolition of the stadium will be split into four phases, with it being emptied. So, anything that can be salvaged or separated – things like cables, panels, lighting, air conditioning, etc. – will be removed. It is estimated that 5,000 tonnes of material will be removed.
Phase two will then focus on the roof, which is one of the ‘most complex’ parts of the structure. The steel system will need to be dismantled, all whilst ensuring that the roof remains balanced. It will be a delicate process.

Then will be the actual demolition and 225,000 tonnes of demolished material are expected, equivalent to 93,750 cubic metres of rubble. Most will come from the three-tier stands, but there will also be the spirals, ramps and towers.
Finally, all the materials will be processed and then transported elsewhere. It’s a complex process, but it will be required to permanently transform the area. Nothing will be done before the new stadium is standing, though.
