Scaroni makes Newcastle comparison as he explains Serie A’s TV rights issue

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni has once again made the comparison between TV rights in Serie A versus the Premier League, and he made a rather bleak prediction.

It has been well documented over the past few months and even years that a chasm has opened up between Serie A and the likes of the Premier League and LaLiga when it comes to the money being collected from broadcasting deals.

The issue of selling TV rights – particularly to overseas groups – is something that will become deeply topical in Italy in the not-so-distant future, with the league having the potential of being able to earn more given the exploits of its clubs in Europe.

Scaroni spoke at an event at Bocconi University and he answered questions from the students present, including one about the issue of TV rights deals and the revenues collected in Italy, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Premier League revenue is an important issue. It collects 7 billion while Serie A gets 2.8 billion. I don’t think we will be able to fill this gap but we will try, obviously the results we are getting in the Champions League help,” he said.

“They bring fans closer to seeing our league. In the distribution of revenues in England, small clubs are treated better than in Italy, but this is possible because the revenue pie is bigger.

“From TV revenues, Newcastle have obtained much more money than Milan and Inter, I think it’s enough to give an idea of how far we are.”
