Scaroni addresses rumours about PIF and Pioli’s future: “Media buzzword”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni responded to questions about Stefano Pioli’s future and potential investment from the Middle East before the game against Empoli.

There seems to be a cycle that has emerged in recent weeks whereby a source will state that Milan are the subject of a potential investment/a takeover from the Middle East, then denials emerge.

This week it was the turn of Il Sole 24 Ore and more specifically the journalist Carlo Festa, who claimed that the Saudi sovereign fund PIF are targeting a new wave of investments in Europe and in sports, with Milan a target for them.

In the midst of all this, Pioli continues to be the subject of speculation. He is under contract until June 2025 but there are rumours that there might be a parting of the ways before next season, even if there is still plenty to play for.

Scaroni spoke to DAZN moments before kick-off at San Siro this afternoon, with his comments relayed by MilanNews and translated below.

What can you tell us about Pioli’s future?

“This thing about Pioli’s future has been a buzzword for many months… Only a media buzzword, certainly not within the team. Ibrahimovic said it very well, he must continue to work calmly and everything will be fine.”

And the PIF rumours?

“Giorgio Furlani said it very well, there is nothing true, nothing true. Another buzzword that concerns us that I will let pass calmly. Nothing is happening at all.”

You met with WeBuild last week…

“Given that we as Milan continue to carry forward the San Donato project, which is our priority: we have spent 40 million, it is a front that continues. On San Siro, Mayor Sala wants to make one last attempt to renovate San Siro. Naturally we can only say yes.

“We gave the requirements to WeBuild so they can make a project. This project is about what can be done at San Siro to make it modern and suitable for our needs. Second, how can we do this while still playing football: two teams playing in cup competitions among other things.

“What kind of impact all this can have on the teams, on the fans and on our public. Before making a judgment, let’s see what WeBuild will give us, which is actively working and has promised us a result by June.”
