Schira: How Bonera is preparing for taking the reins of Milan’s U23 side

By Euan Burns -

Daniele Bonera is expected to become the first coach of AC Milan’s U23 side next season and he has been preparing for the job in the best possible way.

As reported by Nicolo Schira (via Radio Rossonera), Bonera is getting used to the level that he is likely to be coaching at by watching the Serie C playoff match between Catania and Atalanta U23.

That gave him the chance to see the business end of the league that Milan U23 would go into, whilst also seeing how teams play against one of the Serie A U23 teams, in this case Atalanta.

The game ended 1-0 to Catania who were the away side, and Bonera is sure to have learnt a lot from the experience.

Milan are attempting to enter a U23 side in Serie C, as Atalanta and Juventus have done in the recent past.

Whilst it has not yet been officially announced, former Milan defender Bonera is expected to be the inaugural coach and he will be tasked with helping to develop young players in a first-team environment who can then help the senior team or be sold for profit.

He is taking the right steps to acclimatise to the league.

  1. Why is Bonera the head of the Under 23s and not Abate who has actual coaching experience and with younger players? It doesn’t even make sense. Plus he’s a throwback to the banter era. I hope Abate moves on to coaching a Serie A team.

    1. So ,Bonera, who played for Milan from 2006 till 2015, is a throwback of the banter era, but Abate who played for Milan from 2009 till 2019 is not? 🤔 .
It sure doesn’t make sense what you are saying.

      1. Well because if you were old enough to watch football back then you would know bonera is as worse as they come. Horrible in good and bad teams of milan.

        1. Yep.. if he knew his history well or lived it he’d know Bonera was a pain to see in the starting lineup. Abate was not. My fondest memory of Abate is shutting down a prime CR7. My fondest memory of Bonera is him being manhandled against Man Utd.
These guys just say things for the sake of rebuttals. The bigger point, which obviously he missed, was about appointing one to coach the U23 given he’s already coaching the youth system and familiar with the players while the other is just a an as.sistant for the first team with no prior real head coaching experience at any level.
