Schira: Milan may reward Gabbia’s form with a new contract after opening talks

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are preparing to offer defender Matteo Gabbia a new contract with the club after his impressive form since returning from a loan spell at Villarreal.

As has been reported by Nicolo Schira on X, the Italian defender has impressed the Milan hierarchy with his performances since being called back in the midst of a defensive emergency.

It seemed that Gabbia’s time with Milan was coming to an end when he was loaned to Villarreal, but he failed to impress in Spain and with multiple defenders suffering injuries at Milan, he was recalled as an emergency option.

He took the situation in his stride and whilst certainly not the ideal starter for Stefano Pioli’s side, he has proved himself a worthy option when the squad needs rotating.

There is now a plan in place to extend Gabbia’s contract until 2028, allowing him some stability. Talks have already opened, with Milan knowing that Gabbia now represents a good depth option without the need to spend money on a new defender.

Whilst other defenders are being targeted for the summer transfer window, it could be financially prudent to keep Gabbia at the club given he clearly has a strong desire to play for Milan.

  1. It’s a no brainer. Our 4 CBs next season need to be Tomori, Thiaw, Gabbia and Buongiorno

Scalvini sadly is out of our reach. Also with Buongiorno I suspect we will release statements of our interest all summer and then inter will get him

  2. Reminds me when Kalulu and Bennacer were a few months prior to contract renewal. They were playing great.
Hope the pattern doesn’t repeat with Gabbia.
