Script now flipped: Allegri does to Bartesaghi what he did to Estupinan

Pervis Estupinan is set to get the chance once again tomorrow, starting in Lazio-Milan, and it’s a turn of events that we saw at the start of the season with Davide Bartesaghi.

When Milan announced the arrival of Estupinan from Brighton in the summer, everyone expected him to be the Theo Hernandez replacement, especially since they paid close to €20m. At the start of the season, that was definitely the case, with the Ecuadorian considered a starter in the team.

However, after receiving a red card in the game against Napoli, Estupinan had to sit out the clash against Juventus and Bartesaghi stepped up to the plate. The international break followed and unfortunately for the Ecuadorian, he sustained an ankle injury with his national team.

This meant that Bartesaghi not only got the chance against Juventus, but also in the games against Fiorentina, Pisa and Atalanta. There and then, Massimiliano Allegri understood that he was something special and made him the starter instead.

Roles reversed

16 games after definitely becoming the starter, we could be looking at another change for Bartesaghi. Due to muscle discomfort, he started on the bench in the Derby della Madonnina and Estupinan definitely seized the opportunity, scoring the winner with a cracking effort.

Reports are suggesting that Estupinan will get the chance against Lazio as well, keen on giving the player in form continued faith. It only makes sense as that is exactly why Allegri decided to start Bartesaghi instead, throwing any hierarchy out the window by relying on the form instead.

Now, having said the above, Estupinan has been more error-prone than Bartesaghi this season and that could lead to yet another shift down the line. If he wants to avoid that, then the Ecuadorian will have to put in another good performance tomorrow, perhaps with another goal or an assist…

  1. The thing about back then and now is that we now have the luxury of time whereby we know what these two players offer as we’ve seen enough of both to make that sort of comparison. Bartesaghi is farrrr better than Estupinian. Both in stats and then even moreso when you factor in age.

  2. It’s good to have options. Milan needs 2 players for every position and given the amount of games, both will play. Bartesaghi is weak in 1v1 and has made several defensive errors that have led to goals and pts dropped, otherwise he is good with the ball at his feet and his passing is good. Estupinan’s injury de-railed his momentum, but now that he is fit, he looks solid on the left. but rotation is necessary and both will play a lot.

    1. I think Bartesaghi is very good a crosses and his defense is solid. He doesn’t seem to link up well with players near him. His game is drive down the sideline and cross it. Estupian seems to have some bonehead moments but is offensively better working with his team mates.

      1. I hear you, however Bartesaghi’s bonehead moments have caused several goals and pts. And did you see the Roma and Juve games? Conceicao carved up Bartesaghi every single time, it was like he wasn’t there. watch his 1v1s, terrible. But I think overall Allegri has 2 decent options on the left.

        1. Milan have conceded the least goals in Serie A with Bartesaghi at left back so what are bone head defenders of the other teams doing?

Honestly you people seek to think that there’s these mythical full backs out there who never allow crosses or shots.

  3. to those of comment here who seems like never play high competitive sport

This here is called momentum. Estupian just had a great week last week, and he probably very confident and think he can do anything in his life.

As a coach, are u gonna choose this guy, or another player who is like normally 10% better. The momentum will fade off and bartesaghi will get his place back.

  4. Flipped script lmao. One is not fully fit while the other, although he scored he almost cost us the game as well, is fit and motivated. It’s an obvious choice currently.

  5. With Estupian at the start of the Season, Milan are top of the league.

In came Batesaghi and we drew with Juventus, Florentian, Pisa and Atlanta and we lost 8 points that could have pulled Milan away from the chasing pack.

Along the line Bertesaghi improved and gave good contributions and goals. But his errors crept back vs Roma, Parma at home and we lost another 5 points.

Estupinalian was guilty for costing us points vs Parma away when we have. A 2 goals lead that affected his return back as a starter.

Allegri knows that we are in the final stages now, where putting a winning run is vital so he needs to go with the strongest player who happens to be estupioan.

With Bertesaghi we could not win 4atches at a stretch.

Now, we need to win all our remaining matches.

  6. Rossoneri Fan, 100% accurate. Please don’t point out facts though…no one in here seems to care about facts…its almost as if no one in here is watching the matches.
