Scudetto chances boosted for Milan as Inter succumb to late Atalanta equaliser

Inter conceded late in their game against Atalanta, resulting in a 1-1 draw, and AC Milan could thus reduce the gap to just five points with a win against Lazio tomorrow.

After the win in the Derby della Madonnina, Milan reduced the gap in the standings to seven points. Nevertheless, with just ten games remaining of the season, the general reaction was that Inter would still be able to secure the Scudetto rather comfortably.

Now, however, Atalanta may have thrown a spanner in the works. After conceding in the first half, the Bergamo side managed to fight their way back at San Siro and found the 1-1 equaliser in the 82nd minute. They then defended the draw until the end, securing one point in the clash.

Subsequently, eight points currently separate Milan and Inter in the standings, meaning the Rossoneri would reduce that to just five with a win against Lazio tomorrow. At that point, catching up five points in nine games would remain difficult, but a tad more realistic too.

Atalanta’s equaliser didn’t come without controversy as the Atalanta attacker Ibrahim Sulemana was in a duel with Denzel Dumfries, who fell to the ground after feeling the former’s hand to his back. However, the referee let the play go on and VAR also confirmed his decision afterwards.

Inter certainly weren’t happy after the game, similarly to what we saw after the final whistle in the derby, but it wasn’t a horrible call by any means. If anything, it looked as Dumfries expected a heavier push and fell to the ground rather easily.

  1. As I said last week, Chivu has been helped a lot by luck this season. As I noted, we won the first game vs Atalanta due to sheer luck. Chivu ran out of luck this time, and his crazy subs threw away a game which we were winning and controlling.
The Scudetto race is open again if Milan beat Lazio.

    1. That said, the kick in the box on the Inter player has been a penalty all year. Inter seems to be lacking in grita. Neither team was particularly good, except Atalanta turned it on at the end and Inter didn’t. Inter seems to be there for the taking. Will ACM have the b@lls to really go for it? Ties don’t help at this point.

    2. Agreed.

His subs were nuts! Devrij?! Bonny for Esposito when Thuram was literally useless? Frattesi? His inexperience showed again.

    3. Wow, you guys really do lack confidence. 5 point gap in 9 games? This is still Inter’s scudetto to lose.

  2. Dumbfries diving unnecessarily cost inter points. 😂
Also, inter not being given penalty right after that made it even funnier.
Milan needs to take care of business tomorrow vs Lazio.

  3. inter fans were still wailing about the Ricci “penalty” from last week and now this 😂 My God it’d be hilarious if they balls up yet another scudetto…

  4. Unfortunately the talk is going to be about the “controversial” goals instead of Atalanta seizing he moment and Inter losing focus.

None of the call were controversial I thought. Dumfires was flailing his legs backwards hoping to touch the Atalanta player… Embarrassing.

And the Frattesi no call was right as it was the lightest of contacts yet he went down like he was shot from a rifle… Also embarrassing.

    1. I agree on the Dumfries call, disagree as I thought the Fratessi foul was clear as did most of the announcers in the States. Also, no VAR for the Fratessi call?

    2. Clear penalty.
The game is over. Inter lost 2 points. They will not go back and award Inter a penalty if after the game we say that it was a clear penalty. We don’t have to pretend it wasn’t.
Inter have benefited from refs decisions all year long while Milan have been hurt by refs decisions. Today Inter’s “luck” of refs decision helping them ran out on the Scalvini/Frattesi situation.

  5. Inter is just getting some much needed karma. The calciopoli scudetto should have never been awarded to them and this season they are running out of favor from referees.

That was a clear dive by Dumfries and for no reason because he was still ahead of the player and would have cleared the ball.

The pressure is clearly getting to them especially after they lost the derby and still can’t get a win against Milan. That was also a good no penalty call on Fratessi. Inter players are notorious divers. Smh

  6. I doubt Milan will win everything till the end of season. Still Inter has 95% chance of winning scudetto. We will regret to many points wasted against “small” teams.

  7. It’s easy to be an AC Milan fan and write that the ref calls were fair. It’s embarrassing for Calcio, embarrassed in Europe and hopefully Nazionale will not qualify for WC. Football in Italy is so corrupted, no coherence in the ref calls, one week it’s a penalty the other week it’s not because the color of the shirt is different. Serie A lost all credibility this year yet again. May English footy’, the true and genuine live on.

  8. U guys had time to watch Inter? Lol
Granted I forgot to record the game for later viewing but still … Wouldn’t shift my calendar for it haha 😅

  9. That’s 5 points dropped by Inter in 2 games. A Milan win tomorrow and Inter will feel like they need to win all of their remaining games. Pressure.
