It’s that time of the year again where the writing and podcast staff at SempreMilan voluntarily humiliate themselves try to call the upcoming season.
The 2024-25 campaign was a tough one to call, as shown by the fact none of the staff called Napoli rebounding to win the league nor Milan having one of the worst campaigns in recent memory, finishing eighth.

Despite this, the upcoming season might be even tougher to call given the sheer amount of overhaul. Napoli, Juventus and Bologna are the only top nine sides to keep their coaches with Inter, Atalanta, Roma, Lazio, Milan and Fiorentina all deciding to roll the dice.
As a disclaimer to this, there is still just under two weeks of the mercato remaining at the time of publishing, which will very much feed into some of the calls that the staff have made.
Without further ado, Oliver, Anthony, Isak, Madison, Stefano, Lorenzo, Ahmed, Maxi, Ivan, Rohit and Nikita put what is left of their reputations on the line.
Scudetto winner
Oli: Napoli. While I think the Lukaku injury could be looked back upon as a sliding doors moment, I also think that the Partenopei have strengthened from an already strong platform, which will allow them to deal with having European football. Never bet against Antonio Conte, either, but I don’t think they will be runaway winners at all.
Anthony: Napoli to repeat but Milan close.
Isak: AC Milan. None of the rivals’ business has moved me this summer, and without a strong prediction, I might as well say the Rossoneri.
Madison: Napoli, I don’t think anyone will be able to stop Conte.
Stefano: Milan.
Lorenzo: Napoli, although it’s hard to believe they will be the first team to defend the Scudetto since Juve’s dominance, Conte can and is their X-Factor. But their squad will suffer with Europe and so Milan (2nd) will be close on their heels.
Ahmed: Napoli.
Maxi: Napoli.
Ivan: Milan.
Rohit: Napoli. Lukaku’s injury might change things but Napoli’s depth is of Serie A pedigree and a coach like Antonio Conte can always work with Serie A pedigree.
Nikita: Milan.
Top seven in order
Oli: Napoli, Inter, Milan, Roma, Juventus, Atalanta, Como. I don’t see Inter’s drop-off as being huge like many because the team will be virtually the same with many similar principles. Roma will be fun under Gasperini and will ride out the positive end to last season, while I see Atalanta struggling a bit under Juric, and Como going up a level after a brilliant mercato.
Anthony: Napoli, Milan, Juventus, Inter, Roma, Como, Lazio.
Isak: AC Milan, Napoli, Inter, Roma, Fiorentina, Juventus, Como.

How Milan will do in the Coppa Italia
Oli: Win it! The drought has to end one year, we’ve been close on several occasions in the past decade, and the man to get us over the line (Allegri) is the man who has won the competition the most (five times).
Anthony: Easy path to the semis and I think they can beat Juve for a derby final. I have a feeling they don’t win it though, so runners-up.
Isak: Semi-finals. I’m not buying into the Mr Coppa Italia hype as much as other fans.
Madison: We are going all the way.
Stefano: Semi-final and knocked out.
Lorenzo: Final, just at this point winning it seems harder than a UCL for us. We have the competitions best manager so it’s possible, but I see some reffing bullsh**. But a final appearance is an absolute must.
Ahmed: Winners.
Maxi: Semi-finals.
Ivan: Win it baby!
Rohit: Winner. Max the Coppa specialist will look to win the trophy given Milan only has two trophies to contend.
Nikita: Winners, it’s a double!
Relegated teams
Oli: Cremonese, Pisa, Lecce. The former two are promoted sides that haven’t strengthened enough in my opinion, while Lecce losing Krstovic is a big blow, though I hope they do well due to Camarda being there. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sassuolo really struggle too.
Anthony: Parma, Pisa, Cremonese. No particular order.
Isak: Parma, Pisa, Cremonese. For no particular reason whatsoever.
Madison: Pisa, Verona, Sassuolo.
Stefano: Cremonese, Pisa, Lecce.

Oli: Marcus Thuram. A really hard decision because I think the winner will get no more than 18 goals, but I think Thuram – without Lookman coming – will play and score plenty. If Boniface can stay fit though…
Anthony: Slim options this season. I guess Kean but no one sticks out. Might be a new breakout player.
Isak: Moise Kean. Pioli ball to make it happen.
Madison: Dare I say Leao?
Stefano: Moise Kean.
Lorenzo: Boniface (if he comes).
Ahmed: Leao.
Maxi: Lautaro Martínez.
Ivan: Leao.
Rohit: Wild option, but I’m gonna go with Nikola Krstovic of Atalanta.

Oli: Santiago Gimenez. Somewhat paradoxically to my last comment given I mentioned Boniface as a Capocannoniere winner, but I will be surprised if he makes more league starts than Gimenez because of his issues. So, Santi will bang in 13-15 to quieten any doubters.
Anthony: Leao.
Isak: Santiago Gimenez. Please give the man a chance!
Madison: Leao. I think he’s going to be unleashed with Allegri.
Stefano: Boniface* (Leao if not signed).
Lorenzo: Boniface (again if he comes 😂), if not I’m gonna say Rafa.
Ahmed: Leao.
Maxi: Rafael Leao.

Most assists for Milan
Oli: Christian Pulisic. Was torn between him and Luka Modric, but for minutes alone I think the Croatian-American takes it.
Anthony: Leao or Pulisic.
Isak: Rafael Leao. His position will affect my prediction a lot, but it feels like a reasonable shout.
Madison: Pulisic is going to be setting up all those Leao goals.
Stefano: Leao.
Lorenzo: Puli, did it last season will do it again.
Ahmed: Pulisic.

Milan’s player of the season
Oli: Rafael Leão. It may seem strange given I didn’t name his as top for goals or assists, but I think he gets over 30 goal contributions and will finally be a bit more consistent, which will be acknowledged when the votes are counted.
Anthony: Leao. I think we see a 30+ GA season from him.
Isak: Luka Modric. Wouldn’t that just be beautiful?
Madison: Leao.
Stefano: Leao.
Lorenzo: Leao, simply he is our best player.
Ahmed: Leao.

Milan’s breakout performer
Oli: Samuele Ricci. Some may question him being a ‘breakout’ player who cost over €20m, but having seen so much doubt about what he can do, I think after a few games everyone will agree he is a quality regista.
Anthony: Torn between Jashari and De Winter. Jashari probably expected to be top quality but De Winter is my dark horse. He will usurp Tomori’s starting spot and hold it for the season.
Isak: Strahinja Pavlovic. It was a very inconsistent first season, but with Allegri’s guidance and a little more discipline, he could be great.
Madison: I really way Musah to have a break out season. If the news about how Allegri likes him is true then it’s possible! I don’t think it’s fair to pick a new player as a break out one given they have had zero time with the team. With all this being said, the break out player will be none other than… Saelemaekers.
Stefano: Ricci.
Lorenzo: Estupinan.
Ahmed: Jimenez.
Maxi: Ardon Jashari.
Ivan: A bit short on youngsters this year but I think Pavlovic will take a big leap forward and lead at the back after a shaky last season.
Rohit: Jashari.
Nikita: Ricci.

Quick note: I tend to be pessimistic but means doing better feels great. I will be very happy if we finish top 4 this year. Expecting us to win is just setting up for failure and putting unrealistic pressure on a young team IMO.
Reasons for my pessimism this year:
1. I think we’re going to struggle a lot with the amount of transition in the team. Much like Pioli’s first season, for me I expect to see more from the young players next season.
2. Lack of experience: I was disappointed we didn’t follow through with interest in Xhaka but particular issue at the back where we just have no natural leaders. If we sign one more player I’d hope for an experienced defender.
3. We’ve got a few really sizeable injury risks, so what are the odds on RLC, Leao, Pulisic, Mike and Boniface have a fit season? If they do, we can really click, but I have my doubts.
4. The issues with the Curva are potentially going to have a huge effect too.
5. Where is the creativity going to come from? We’re going to be the main one of the ‘big’ teams without a natural no10.
And, for balanace, reasons for optimism:
1. We should have some more defensive balance with a proper DM and Allegri in charge.
2. Fofana being freed up from being the only one with any defensive duties could reap benefits.
3. We have two proper goalscoring no9 options, if we can find a tactic that works with them.
4. The experiments with Leao as a no9 I can see light in. Surprised by that, I thought he couldn’t operate in the middle but I’m starting to think it could work.
5. Modric should hopefully work some magic with Jashari, Fofana and Ricci to improve their games throughout the season.

Which ‘big’ serie A team, outside of Roma (Dybala, talking about sizable injury risk) and I guess Napoli’s De Bruyne (another sizable injury risk) has a natural n10? Matter fact, how many natural n10’s are there in today’s football?
The closest thing to a n10 in serie A is Nico Paz.
That’s fair, I’m thinking of it as a role more than a position. Reijnders for us last year played deeper than a historic ‘no10’ but he took a lot of that role on in terms of creativity and a scoring threat. He often broke past the last defender when our CF dropped off or lurked around the penalty spot when we were attacking deep.

Can’t really put my head around this one. So many clubs changed coaches and players alike with us being the flag bearer. I prefer stability as always, so Napoli and Lazio are going to be up there.
I don’t have the same faith in Max as many fans do. I do think he’s quite overrated. I only judge his results by his first stint with us and the second one with Juve. So this is why I’d say 3rd might be our best bet but we could be around 4th. I think Juric is going to make Atalanta suffer and Chivu at Inter is a wild card. I do think he won’t be able to handle it and Inter will
hire a new coach mid season….but who is the question and would they make a run of they get a good coach. I put Juve up there only because I saw how they played vs bvb and they were quite good. Tudor’s team shouldn’t be a surprise is they are top of the table early on.
On the players, it’s hard to say with so many changes. I’d like to think break out stars are ones which have been there, haven’t been doing super great but then have a good season with us, hence RLC/ salad choice. The rest were safe bets. Even Capocannoniere is a toss up.

I think Allegri is excellent (see all of his Scudetti) but can’t think of many managers (or even players) who have done well with second stints (including even Allegri when he went back to Juve).

But, yes it’s overwhelmingly against the odds. I will, however, note that in most occasions the returning coach comes back to largely the same group of players. I think this creates issues, as there is a risk of staleness. In our case with Allegri, it’s a completely different club. New owners, new management, and not a single player remains that was here when Allegri last coached.

I think Palladino is a good candidate to take over from Chivu or Juric should they stumble (or any of the top clubs really), as he did well to finish midtable twice with Monza and then took Fiorentina to 6th. Not sure why neither Inter or Atalanta took a look at him in the summer, particularly Atalanta who was looking for a coach from the “Gasperini school”.
Agreed, I like Palladino too. Was also thinking Ranieri too might take over from a struggling club but I think he’s in Roma’s management now and probably has finished coaching altogether. I think Inter might have more problems than people think. They’ve been playing Inzaghi ball for a loooong time now. I want to see how they’ll transition.
It is very hard to predict the Scudetto winner, as no team is really convincing.
* Napoli are widely seen as the favourites, but Conte having to play in Europe is not a good omen, especially given the fact that last season they unconvincingly won just because Inter threw it away.
* Inter are the strongest team on paper, but crazy Marotta has not strengthened the aged defense. The addition of Sucic in midfield and Pio Esposito in attack are a great boost, but the defense is a big problem. Plus Chivu was appointed only because there was no available experienced alternative at the time.
* Milan have the advantage of not playing in Europe, and Max has a lot of experience, but defense is a big question since no serious investment was done in that front.
* Juventus have done a disappointing mercato for their fans. However, sometimes teams that change little do better.
Since Milan on paper have the 2nd best team, Max has won a zillion trophies in Italy, and don’t play in Europe, Milan have the Scudetto within reach, but whether they take advantage of this or not is to be seen. Overall I don’t expect a lot of great performances in Serie A, the teams are slow in thinking and don’t play an attacking style.

And as usual I apply different standards to the owner, manager, and players.
For the owners, the only possible way they could even close to redeeming themselves is a Scudetto.
For Allegri (who has a certain amount of goodwill and also a mismatch of a squad that has been through multiple revolutions) I’ll let him get away with a 5th place finish.
For the players, well there can’t keep being revolutions so I’d give them a wide birth as usual. Top 7.

I think people are very optimistic here, given the fact that Milan welcomes so many new players and also a new coach. I don’t expect the level of consistency that is needed to win the scudetto.
Nevertheless I remain optimistic in regards of achieving champions league football, which should be the goal.
My predicted top 7/8: Napoli, Juve, Inter, Milan, Atalanta, Fiorentina, Lazio/Roma.
I don’t think Milan will do well in the Coppa, as I predict a lot of rotation in the squad, whereto the width of the squad isn’t strong enough. Especially in defence. So maybe quarter final?
Our top scorer should be Gimenez, I really hope he stays even though some rumours put him in the market. I think he will have a great season, and it will help having Boniface pressuring him to deliver.
Main assist provider should be Pulisic, if he stays fit. But I also expect a lot from Saelemakers this season. Leao will be a potential runner up for both assists and goals, but I don’t see him topping either.
Next season we might take the scudetto, or a good CL run. This year is about creating team dynamic while achieving satisfying results i terms of a top 4 and CL qualification.

I’m not sure if the Boniface addition will leave Pulisic out of a starting position but if Pulisic starts more than 75% of our matches he’ll come in first in assists.
