SempreMilan’s Player of the Month for December: Defender wins for the first time

By Ivan Stoev -

The last month of the year was an exciting one for Milan and their fans as there was a lot of emotion in almost all the games played throughout, with the Rossoneri finishing off a wonderful calendar year in the best way.

The month of December was one full of injuries and suspensions with the team missing more than five players at one point. The time was ideal for the squad to showcase that they have reliable players on the bench and are serious about winning something this season.

While two consecutive draws in the league against Parma and Genoa were worrying, the team bounced back with style to finish on top of the table for Christmas.

For the very first time we have a defender to win the award and you can see the top three down below…

3. Romagnoli – Average rating: 7.00

After coming back from injury Alessio was criticised because of his bad performances with people somewhat forgetting how good he was prior to his absence.

The captain finally started getting into form in December acting as leader in the absence of Zlatan, Kjaer and Bennacer. For that reason and his pleasing performances as of late, keeping mistakes to a minimum, the Italian occupies the third spot.

2. Hakan Calhanoglu – Average rating: 6.92

A close second is Calhanoglu, and even though he had a slightly lower rating than Romagnoli, the Turk managed two goals and five assists for the month so deserves second spot.

Hakan was been somewhat inconsistent this season in comparison to the ending of last season, but he has been crucial for the team nevertheless. Even when not scoring or assisting, Calhanoglu is helping a lot in defence and has acted as a leader when he was needed.

In a month where Milan needed someone to step up, he was scoring and providing crucial assists to keep Milan at the top of the table and only falls short of the first place.

1. Theo Hernandez – Average Rating: 7.50

The winner for the month is none other that Theo Hernandez. The Frenchman has been world class and is one of the main reason Milan are still unbeaten and top of the table. With a whopping three goals and two assists in December from the left-back, position Theo has been a true leader for the Rossoneri.

Hernandez has been improving his game since coming to the team and has grown into the pillars of this side. Don’t let his attacking contribution fool you either, he has been superb at the back as well.

A brace against Parma – including a last minute equaliser – to keep the unbeaten run going and a last minute winner against Lazio to get Milan back at the top of the league just proves how stubborn he is, always fighting to the very last minute. A very well deserved first place for him.
