Serafini believes Adli can convince Pioli: “Just like Pirlo with Ancelotti”

By Isak Möller -

Yacine Adli played the last two games from start and he did well in both of them, now in the running for a starting spot against Borussia Dortmund. As highlighted by Luca Serafini, he has the quality to convince Stefano Pioli.

Rade Krunic’s injury forced the manager to give Adli a chance in the No.6 role and the Frenchman took it. His performance against Cagliari was encouraging and although he got a bit lost yesterday against Lazio, he improved in the second half.

Speaking to MilanTV after the game, as cited by MilanNews, Serafini shared his thoughts on the situation of Adli. He compared the 23-year-old with Andrea Pirlo, in the sense that he has the qualities to win over Pioli.

“Every time Adli was used this year, I didn’t mind it. On the other hand, he never excited me. It’s not that Pioli dislikes him, Milan believe in him but Adli has his own path. I believe he’s capable of changing Pioli’s mind just as Pirlo did with Ancelotti,” he stated.

As said, Milan will take on Dortmund away from home in the Champions League next. Sky Italia have stated that the main XI battle is between Adli and Tommaso Pobega, with Tijjani Reijnders to play as the No.6 if the latter starts.

  1. “It’s not that Pioli dislikes him, Milan believe in him but Adli has his own path. I believe he’s capable of changing Pioli’s mind just as Pirlo did with Ancelotti”

Well the first part is wrong. Pioli literally said he didn’t want Aldi in the team as he was surplus to requirements. And Pirlo didn’t have to change Ancelotti’s mind, Ancelotti changed Pirlo’s position because he’s a good coach and he wanted Prilo in the team. In 01/02 it was trying to figure out where he could play (LM,.CAM, AM and eventually DM) but unlike Adli, Pirlo got 10 times the amount of time Adli played in his first season so he was brought in for a reason. With Adli, who knows why Pioli don’t/didnt use him. Upon realizing where Pirlo can play best, he got even more minutes and the rest is history.

    1. Excellent post mate. You are correct. For those who don’t know, Pirlo was a no10 at inter and when he went on loan to provincial teams he did well. However at the top level he lacked that burst of pace to be a world class no10. It was Ancelotti who devised the idea to drop him back to regista and play as a ‘quarterback’.

Some managers prefer a blocker at no6,pre progressive managers liek to have a ball player there. I mean Allegri played Flamini, Ambrosini and De Jong in midfield 😂’

      1. @Dave exactly that! Pirlo was a CAM before becoming a DM but more importantly we got him and used him for a reason. In fact the whole tactics by Ancelotti was disguised. Pirlo on paper was a DM but really a deep lying playmaker with a pitbull besides him. We all knew Gattuso wasn’t the designated DM but was obviously the defensive force though on paper her was a RM. It’s like Kaka’s position, there wasn’t really one, he was everywhere but on paper probably SS, LAM or even CAM depending on how you look at it. The whole thing was just orchestrated beautifully.

    1. And when Pirlo was a struggling no10 at inter, who would have thought he’d go on to be the best midfielder of his generation?

I think you’re showing you’re age, because everyone thought it was madness putting Pirlo there..clearly you didn’t live its
