Serginho praises Maldini and Theo Hernandez as he tips Milan for derby success vs. Inter

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan legend Serginho has heaped praise upon former team-mate Paolo Maldini and current left-back Theo Hernandez for leading the Rossoneri’s revival.

Serginho was Maldini’s partner in many battles as between 1999 and 2008 the pair won several trophies together including the Champions League twice and the Scudetto.

The Brazilian was interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport about the work that Maldini has done in his new role of technical director and the way he seems to be bringing the Rossoneri back to the top.

“The road is drawn, Paolo has done a great job. He has adapted to the philosophy of the property: young players to build a winning project. Milan dreams big thanks to him,” he said (via MilanLive).

Among the players that Maldini is credited with bringing to the club is left-back Theo Hernandez, who joined from Real Madrid for a fee widely reported to be €20m. Since his arrival, he has made the position his own and has become one of the best full-backs in Europe.

“In Europe, do you see better players than him? I don’t. Maybe I was more technical, but he has the physique: a monster. We would have alternated with Maldini further back.”

Milan will be looking to secure their passage into the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia by beating Inter at San Siro on Tuesday night.

The Rossoneri have made the final four of the competition in each of the last three seasons, and Serginho believes they will make it four in a row.

“Scudetto test? Yes. The gap in the standings is minimal and the effects of a derby should not be underestimated. But we will win…”
