Liberali’s busy summer
In recent days, there have been plenty of links to other Serie A clubs, with Juventus reportedly interested in the youngster. Though they are not alone.
According to Sky Sport, via Calciomercato.com, Liberali will be a ‘key player’ this summer, thanks to the €6 million release clause inserted into his contract. Of course, if this is activated, the Rossoneri will be owed half, but that doesn’t ease the feeling of regret.
Indeed, Bologna, Cagliari and Sassuolo have all enquired about the youngster, but they may be overshadowed by Champions League outfit, Como. Indeed, the young attacker is seen as a ‘perfect’ addition to Cesc Fabregas’ squad, especially with his Italian passport.

You post as though you’re the only person who’s aware that Yamal / Messi etc are ‘one in a billion’ talents; you’re not – everybody knows that and doesn’t have those expectations for youngsters. It quite obviously follows that if there’s only 1 or 2 Yamals per generation, then literally no one expects to have a squad of Yamals.
Liberali is clearly gifted, and seems likely to be getting a Serie A move this summer because the links are rife enough to suggest they’re real. The limit of his gift might well be spending the next 15 years bouncing around Parma/Verona/Lecce, or he might go to Juve and become a “great” player. You don’t know and I don’t know.

Not a single young player sold by the team in recent decades has gone on to be a star elsewhere. Tonali was already an international and sold for a high fee so he doesn’t count. Liberali is short. The chances of him becoming a great player are slim.
Kerkez? Bellanova is not doing bad? And about 10 more that were released or sold for a few M and could have been squad players at Milan today.

The GOAT Messi is short. Short players have low center of gravity and good at dribbling. Not saying Liberali will become superstar but your idea of short players not being successful is completely wrong. Liberali needs to get stronger like Gattuso though.

Home grown players mean a lot for the fans, they help with squad lists, they help maintain an identity for the club.
I think the club should do more to try to keep young talents.

You accuse people of hyperbole and then draw unreasonably high lines as to what constitutes a worthwhile career.
I wouldn’t consider them stars or their sales a cause for regret. Locatelli had a good few weeks at the Euros several years ago and that’s about it. Home grown players are important, but to suggest that Milan could regret letting a short player who hasn’t done anything of note at senior level is a stretch. If Liberali was taller, my guess if they would have kept him, but he isn’t. The odds are heavily stacked against him. If there’s one good thing the club have done under multiple owners, it’s moving on young players that didn’t make the grade. Of course, it points to another huge problem – obviously the development is garbage!
Modric and Messi are short. Baggio, Del Piero, and Signori were short. Joao Neves is short. Fabrizio Miccoli and Gianfranco Zola were short. Maradona was short. Height doesn’t matter in football. Stop with the heightism.
Fabio Cannavaro is only 5’8 I believe and excelled in a role where players are typically 6’2 and above. Stop it!

If we are gonna follow some peoples assessments of Milan talents over the years then I guess we could just as well sell all of our youngsters as they are already bound to fail.
Some posts here about our young talent not becoming stars elsewhere:
1. We don’t need them to become stars. We need them to meaningfully contribute and save us the hundreds of millions we spend on players like Joao Felix, Gimenez, Abraham, Musah, Emerson Royal, Estupinian, Konstant, Sottil, Biglia, Essien, Walker…etc. that are just passing through.
2. Locatelli, Cristante, and Calabria have had good careers as did Abate before them. We had Aubameyang until 2011. He would have been a good back-up for Pato.
3. Not every youngster will hit ground running like Donnarumma or Pato. Youth players need time, guidance, and the opportunity to make mistakes; not shipped out on loan after a few bad games. The players we sign, they get a season or two. Leao was given time, Tonali was given time, Musah was given time, and they should. Why don’t we extend that to our youth players?

If we were going to regret selling him, why not just activate his release clause and buy him back? We should be able to activate his €6 million release clause and since we are owed half, we technically could buy him back for €3 million. I’m not saying we should do it. What I am saying is if the new coach wants him and will play him, it is a small fee to pay…
This is what Real Madrid does. You can buy him 3 mil and if you dont want him then you can sell for way more than 3 mil.
Because the player doesn’t want to come back. Milan didn’t want to sell him, they wanted to extend him but he turned down the contract extension and Milan had to either sell him or lose him for free this summer
