Shevchenko discusses 2003 Euroderby, who could be decisive this time and what Leao ‘lacks’

By Oliver Fisher -

Andriy Shevchenko has recalled the emotions he felt during the two Champions League knockout clashes he was part of against Inter in the 2000s.

Milan and Inter will meet in the final four of the Champions League 20 years after the last time they met at this stage of the competition and 18 years after the last European derby. On both occasions the Rossoneri prevailed.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side on away goals in 2003 after a 1-1 aggregate draw and then in 2005 they won 2-0 in the first leg and were awarded a 3-0 win in the second leg after the game was abandoned when flares rained down on Dida.

Shevchenko spoke to AllMilan.it and various points were discussed from the Euroderbys of 18 and 20 years ago, the exploits of Rafael Leao and a possible chance for revenge in Istanbul.

How did you experience the 2003 Euroderby?

“We all had the same feeling and immediately felt the importance of the match. Some of us couldn’t sleep, there was so much tension.”

What was the atmosphere like in Milan during those weeks?

“The city was shaking, the match was so heartfelt. Before the match, arriving at the stadium we saw many fans, inside San Siro the air was a bit heavy.

“But when you enter the field you immediately forget everything else and the tension disappears. Both teams wanted to win. The beauty of this derby is that it is seen as an important challenge.”

Is Leao already a top player? What can he improve on?

“This is his second season where he is doing well, Rafa is proving to be a great player. He still lacks consistency, because everyone knows his level, his enormous abilities and they expect a lot from him for the characteristics and talent he has.

“In my opinion he could still grow and give so much more. He must find continuity and be decisive in every match. If he will stay at Milan? I don’t know, it’s not a question for me to answer.”

Can Milan beat Inter like in 2003? Who can be the Shevchenko of this team?

“Definitely yes, Milan could repeat history. The decisive player could be Leao, Tonali or Giroud. Milan have players who are doing very well this season. Brahim Diaz and Theo Hernandez are also having a great season.”

The final is in Istanbul: do you believe in fate?

“Milan have already settled the accounts with Liverpool in 2007 in Athens. I would like to see Milan in the final, it would be a dream for everyone.”

How nice would it be to see Milan in the final against Ancelotti?

“Both semi-finals are good, even Real Madrid-City. Of course, seeing a Milan coach in the final against his Milan would be great . Carlo is a great coach, we will see…”
