GdS: Wrong penalty call and missed red for Sterling – Siebert disaster ruins Milan-Chelsea

By Oliver Fisher -

Referee Daniel Siebert has been rightly criticised by this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport for getting major calls wrong in last night’s game between Milan and Chelsea.

The paper (via MilanNews) talks about the penalty and red card incident first, stating that Fikayo Tomori had one hand resting on the shoulder of Mason Mount but only that rather than pulling him back, so to award a spot kick was the wrong decision.

What happened on 18 minutes between Tomori and Mount did not look like an overwhelming impediment to the point that the Chelsea player – already free from contact – took two steps and managed to get his shot away.

If it was a penalty then the red card was fair because it would be a DOGSO (denial of a goal scoring opportunity), but it simply was not a penalty kick as there was not enough contact and Mount still shot.

From that moment on, referee Siebert totally lost his control over the game. He also should have sent Raheem Sterling off early in the second half for a second yellow card, so everything major went against Milan.

  1. In case you missed it, DOGSO does not result in red card only if the player made a play on the ball. Tomori did not made a play on the ball, so the only possible scenario to escape red card is if Tomori did not pull Mount. Based on the hand movement, I agree with the article that there was no pulling.

    Law of the game:
“Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling,
pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.”

    1. Dude it wasn’t even a penalty, talk more of a red. It’s just a plain missed chance from Mount and you can see the reactions of both the player and Graham Potter immediately after the miss but then boom there goes the genius referee who was watching the whole game from a different lens.
Yes Mount DEFINITELY has a case if he does fell but he did not.

      1. Didn’t I already say:

“Based on the hand movement, I agree with the article that there was no pulling.”

Read completely before thinking that I agree to that penalty.

      1. Seriously? I said the penalty call is wrong. The referee made huge mistake. No pulling = no foul = no red card!

Cannot you read properly before misjudging other person?!!!!!!!

    2. It was a clear penalty and a red card, grow up!!! You can’t be children that would never admit to something that was obvious. He pulled him with his hand, wasn’t close to the ball. The only person to blame here is Tomori. If it wasn’t a clear red card VAR would intervene, but they didn’t have to.

  2. We need to look into the referee financial, check with the bank
Referee is clearly bought, i never seen someone officiate a game so one sided on home turf, towards away team.

The game is like 11v12 with referee on Chelsea’s team. Then after 20m it become 10v12

Milan need to file a complain, and UEFA need to answer this

    1. UEFA not gonna answer Milan complaints. Those mf’s are completely corrupt. What they only see is just money and Milan didn’t give them as many as EPL clubs and PSG’s did

      1. UEFA is all about making money. They’ll make way more money if one of the biggest clubs in the world, Milan, goes thru, rather than Salzburg or Dinamo. These calls are not some conspiracy by UEFA against Milan , its just bad refereeing

  3. That DOGSO rule needs to be modified.
If a defender is the last man and fouls an attacking player outside of the box stopping him from a clear scoring chance it should result with a free kick and a red card.
But inside the box there should be a penalty and a yellow card. With a red You are punishing the defender and his team twice for a single offence. It’s crazy.
A defender denies a clear scoring chance and you reward the attacker with a penalty. Isn’t the penalty enough. I would understand if it was a hard dangerous foul, but for a slight pull. You are handicapping that team and ruining the game.
Refereeing and VAR is getting worse with every game.
No one turns on TV or pays hard earned money to go to the stadiums to watch the referees. Plus referees decisions and mistakes cost teams, players, coaches, millions, they cost their position in the team or even their jobs.
Unacceptable incompetence for the best competition in sports

      1. That’s besides the point. The issue isn’t that he gave a harsh penalty, The problem is the red card. You can come back from a bad penalty decision, happens often, but you can’t come back from a bad penalty and a bad red card for the same play

      2. Oh! Yes there was – twice if you watch it closely and objectively. I agree though that the referee overall was of a very poor standard

  4. Gone are those days where Referees are beaten or won’t even complete such matches for committing such blunders. I wish I could crush that guy from my screen last night, especially after the red card and easy distribution of yellow cards.

  5. The referee doesn’t even check VAR and every foul by Milan players they got yellow, like Pobega who just in and did a soft tackle and the referee gave him a yellow.

Meanwhile Chelsea players did hard tackle after hard tackle especially against Bennacer, Krunic, and Theo and they only got 3 yellow cards!

It’s just crazy. Milan doesn’t deserves this poor treatment after last season nightmare from Cakir 🙁

  6. New Rules For Red Cards 2022
Now, this has changed – only if a foul in the penalty box is considered a red card on the rest of the field will the player be sent off. So there is no ‘double punishment’ for fouling in the box. A penalty is enough. What is this?

  7. Well, this rule is too harsh. I agree with giving a red card if there was some danger intention and a risk of injury. What Tomori did was not even a proper pulling. Also, Mount already lost the ball in favor of Tata.
Giving penalty and red card in such a case is a double punishment.

  8. The ref is a DOG SO I’m not surprised,😂

All jokes aside, I’m wondering about Sterling’s challenge on Krunic, studs up to his thighs. I mean based on how the game was officiated he should hv been sent off.
The pen incident was 50-50, it could have gone either way but went wayyyy over and above the spirit of the game up until that point

  9. Zašto Var postoji nego da upozori suca na grube nepravilnosti a to su prvenstveno penal i crveni karton !!!!!! Zašto nije reagirao ??????
