The chances of Luka Modric remaining at AC Milan for another year appear to be on the up, at least if two people he knows well are to be believed.

Modric joined Milan on a free transfer from Real Madrid last summer and has already made an enormous impact. Massimiliano Allegri opted to put him literally at the centre of his tactical plans as the deep-lying playmaker in a 3-5-2 system, and he has played almost every minute.

However, decision time is approaching for the Croatian. While there is a club option for an extra year on his contract, it has always been understood that Modric will decide if he does a second season. Recent reports have suggested that it is conditional on a few things being met.

Rakitic is someone that is close to Modric, having played alongside him and against him many times in their respective careers. He spoke to Corriere dello Sport (via Calciomercato.com) about the future of his compatriot.

“He’ll decide. He’s happy at Milan, I think he’ll continue there. There’s no heir to his legacy; he’s inimitable. For the very history of world football,” he said.

Speaking to La Repubblica, he added: “I hope he continues for another 2-3 seasons, he’ll decide. At Milan, all the conditions are there: Luka is happy, the club is happy. He has no heirs. His story is unique: for the national team and for world football.”

Someone else close to Modric is the former Milan defender Dario Simic, who also started his career with Dinamo Zagreb. He spoke to DAZN.

“Modric? He told me he hasn’t decided yet whether he stays or not, but he told me he’s looking for an apartment”.
