Sky: 9km/h slower – Data confirms Theo’s inexcusable work rate on both Parma goals

By Isak Möller -

Theo Hernandez has ended up in the spotlight following AC Milan’s 2-1 defeat to Parma and not in a good way. On both goals conceded, the Frenchman lacked the desire to help out his team and new data has now put this in black and white.

Parma opened the scoring after less than two minutes on the clock, as Dennis Man was left completely free on Milan’s left-hand side. The replays showed poor defending from Theo Hernandez who, despite following the winger for a long distance, failed to stop him.

Things weren’t much better on the second goal as the left-back was seen jogging back, leaving the new signing Strahinja Pavlovic in a difficult position. As reported by Sky Italia (via Espertheo), the goalscorer Matteo Cancellieri ran 9km/h faster (30) than Hernandez’s 21km/h.

On the first goal, meanwhile, Man had a speed of 26km/h while Hernandez stopped at 17km/h, once again 9km/h slower. There is no doubt that this made a huge difference and one must question the Frenchman’s work-rate, seeing as he’s one of the fastest players in Serie A.

In fact, such a performance is even cause for being put on the bench and it remains to be seen what decision Paulo Fonseca will make next weekend.

  1. Milan must not play with the whole team in the opponent’s half, even the defenders must not go deeper, if no one is left behind to cover their space. With a slow and predictable attack, nothing is easier than taking the ball and going on the attack, in that situation eight Milan players are behind the ball, and Tomori and Strahinja remain to defend. Nobody does that. Tactically, in such situations, you should attack with fewer players and, if necessary, with long balls, because you have no chance to reach the goal through a pass. Firstly, because the opponent defends in an organized manner, and secondly, because Milan’s attacks are too slow and predictable, and worst of all, they depend on individual qualities. The pressing is weak and they attack who don’t want to take the ball. Therefore, Milan’s central defenders and at least one defensive midfielder should not go deep into the opponent’s field. Attacks have to be designed and much faster, because weaker teams have to make mistakes after a while. When Theo moves forward deep, a player must remain to cover his position. You must not attack with 10 players, because they are all marked and cannot receive the ball. Commitment and desire must be at their maximum, because without it, neither Real nor City can do anything. Hunger for victory and instilling a winning mentality, because they have to understand that they can beat anyone and that they are going to win every match. Lose, but at least die a man.

      1. It is obvious and I think he knows it too, and I honestly think that he came to the game to help the situation, I believe that as the first game against Torino he wasn’t in the squad and this time The coach wanted to have someone who knows the role better. Reading under the line I would say that was the deal, but they didn’t expect the Parma team to score so fast and because Theo isn’t at his best physical condition I believe that to avoid future injuries he should have take it easy, keep his normal role on the left without being too much into the game and hopping that by giving him time he can speed his condition. And I think the coach and the management hopped for a minimal win, 0-1. Looking at the situation from this point of view I think the coach did do well to list him, little he new things would go completely different.
But, what is the point of rotating on the first game Sealeamakes from LB to RW and from RW to RB???? And if he is in shape why not play him at all??
The reason I believe was that the coach new that his players lack condition!! Now, if that’s the case I would play with the players that are able to keep up for 70 min and than add those updates to help players to get condition, and here is where I star doubting the coaches decisions.
There are so many moments where you analyse the data from the Parma game and you are left with your mouth open!!! However, I hope that this was just a bad luck on calculating the odds and hope it will change on the next game, for the coaches sake as well.

I have though few question for the management?
Why do we have 4 RB in the squad?? I don’t get it? We needed a good left back and we don’t have a substitute for Theo! If we needed a RB, why not go for someone with different characteristics then those we already have, like Bellanova who was a product of our primavera?? But before even thinking about getting a right back, why not evaluate the case of Kalulu, he could play that position easy??
I must praise the coming of Pavlovic, what an amazing performance and without taking anything from him, I am just wondering why sell Simic?? I know we will regret letting him go, hope we have a buyback right.
We had Oliver last season to add goal’s for us and he was very strong in the air. However we new we needed to have more air power and yet this season we have no one upfront to give us the edge in some cases, we need to win games from goals in the air as well. I am still hopping for another striker. Murata is a great player but, I would have got Santiago Gimenez, or preferably Viktor Gyökeres who is an Ibrahimovic supporter. Yes it is money, but it is money well spent, if we think we could still get money if we sell him later and if we work the charm of getting money from shirt sails, and marketing commercials with Milan’s shirt on. Something could have been done. I would have even let Leao part if we got Viktor giving us 30 goals per season!!!!!!!

Any way, I think it’s time to think smart and start getting to the levels Milan deserves to be.

    1. They? I bet you mean Cardinale, Furlani & Zlatan… 😀 😀 😀

There is no one else to blame but Theo himself. He was lazy. He lacks the motivation. Only idiots would blame others.

      1. I didnt mean cardinale, furlani or zlatan, you need to stop thinking about them, why would they be guilty for sending unprepared player on field,he is fat

  2. Just look at him…seems like an unfitted uncle who wants to play with his nephews and their friends in a friendly football game in a sunday afternoon…

  3. Last match it was his guilty second goal, but everyone was talking about thiaw, there is a video where thiaw clearly looks cheching zapata and he saw theo “hugging” zapata,so thiaw goes to cover other free player but theo suddenly leaves zapata and he scores ,there you go now ,no thiaw,no kalulu, and parma had 10 goal chances

  4. It feels like a post Pioli hangover, honestly. These are the same problems that plagued us before with the team prone to counters.

Feels like the proper work ethic and attitude hasn’t been drilled into this team yet to press as a unit and track back as one too.

Not sure if Fonseca can drill that into them or when…

  5. He would have been flying on the wing had that been a through pass for him to attack. Idiot. Ironically we’re all cheering on his contract to be extended and let go Mike. Such a betrayal.
