Sky journalist explains Bennacer’s strange situation: “He didn’t even warm up”

Sky journalist Peppe Di Stefano has explained the bizarre paradox surrounding Ismael Bennacer’s future at AC Milan after he was left out against Parma on Saturday.

It seems that a large part of the end of Milan’s summer mercato depends on what the developments will be regarding Bennacer, which translated means whether he stays or is sold before the deadline.

The Algerian knows that it will be difficult to get a starting spot this season more so than any other season with the arrival of Youssouf Fofana and the growth of both Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah.

There has been talk of the possibility of a move to the Saudi Pro League, while during the loss against Parma three days ago he did not even come off the bench, despite having started against Torino in game one.

Di Stefano spoke live on Sky and he was asked about Bennacer’s situation following his exclusion over the weekend, with his comments relayed by Radio Rossonera.

“It’s a different story for Bennacer [compared to Yacine Adli], we would have to find a solution on the figures for the transfer. I have a hard time thinking that Milan could let him go [for little], also because he has different characteristics,” he said.

“If a significant offer were to arrive, close to 30 million euros, Milan could think about selling him. In the last match he didn’t even warm up, this makes me think that it’s a market choice.”

  1. After the departure of Adlia, another foreigner is redundant (Isma or Salamanda). From this season, 17 foreigners can be registered, and we have 18, plus Adli. Therefore, the story about the arrival of Kone can only be true if Isma and Salmanda leave. The genius of our management is to let Colombo go and leave Jovic.

    1. We have Maignan, Tomori, Pavlovic, Thiaw, Emerson, Theo, Bennacer, Reijnders, Fofana, Leao, Saelemakers, Okafor, Pulisic, Chukwueze, Morata. These are the 15 we have to keep (Emerson is a tough one). Musah, Jimenez are u21 so they don’t count.

Calabria, Gabbia, Torriani, Sportiello, Zeroli, Terraciano?, Liberalli, Camarda. This makes 8 Italians.

RLC and Jovic imo are expandable. 30M from EPL team for RLC and 5M from Turkey for the Serb. If kept we would just use all 17 spots and any additions we would do in the last 4 days would be either Italians or u21 EU players.

  2. Bennacer being sold is a distinct possibility but only if a concrete offer of around 35M Euro comes in right now. It’s been said that Milan will not consider any offer after the midpoint of this week – because there would be no time left to replace him.

I would not be happy to see Bennacer leave. I think he needs to be given more opportunities to recover his pre-injury form. I don’t know if he will recover his form or not, but if he does, he is a truly excellent midfielder.

Musah has been given a higher position in the pecking order than Isma. I think this is a mistake. Poor Musah works really hard and he was clearly mismanaged by Pioli. He was given a dozen roles so he wouldn’t learn the skills for one very well defined role. I hope that Fonseca manages him better. Fonseca has a reputation for working well with young players. However the very Musah has said in post-game press conference after Parma that he didn’t know if he should press or stay behind. That doesn’t bode well for Fonseca’s capacity to manage him.

Musah often carries the ball like nobody. But then, when he gets close to the opponents’ box, he doesn’t know what to do and almost invariably the play ends badly.

I think that Bennacer has done way more for Milan than Musah. Sure, they say Musah has more potential because he is young. We’ll see. I’m not very optimistic that Musah will really improve. I think it is more likely that Isma recovers his pre-injury form, than Musah evolves into a midfielder consistently better than Bennacer.

    1. I do share your negativity at least this one time.
Complete waste, particularly not playing 4-3-3. He is second to Loftus now and even the Englishman doesn’t have a fit in the current setup.

  3. “… And the growth of both Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah.”

What growth? Stop with this cringy bs propaganda. Frattesi the substitute had statistically a better season with less games than our undisputed starter Reijnders. Musah is an NFL running back.

    1. “Musah is an NFL running back”

Exactly!!! I love this analogy! It really explains Musah! He carries the ball extremely well and is fast and athletic but then he doesn’t seem to know how to finish the play as a soccer player must. In American football you can just run with the ball and pass a certain point, and that’s a new set of downs or a score. But in soccer you need to finish the play and pass the ball well to someone in position to score, or you need to score yourself. Musah seems to be completely incapable of doing either. He works hard but is ineffective.

I am very pessimistic regarding Musah’s “potential.”

I am still somewhat hopeful because Musah is still young and clearly Pioli abused him, displacing him to a different position every game, preventing him from learning a defined set of skills. But even with good management (and I’m definitely not sure if Fonseca is a good manager), I’m afraid that Musah simply doesn’t have what it takes to improve as a soccer player.

Maybe indeed Musah should change sports…

    2. People only reading SM must think that Reijnders will lift the next Ballon d’Or and get his jersey retired.

  4. Fonseca needs time it is true but at the end till today we have not seen anything special about his managing. Sth mediocre. With this line up Milan need to switch 3-2-3-2. and in this situation milan can get the best out of 433 or 4-2-3-1 the midfielders are not suitable for this and lb and rb can transfer to the more midfield role and balancing the defence. We have no creativity in wide playing mostly because we dont have a perfect Attacking midfielder. The only one who is capable of playing in this role is Saelemaker and Bennacer ( who is always misplaced in DM) some parts in pioli he played as a more attacking midfielder and the results was very good. He even scores. Anyway it is obvious that the team with these used formations cannot be efficient as it should be. Even inter knows with milan you have to stay deep and milan will give you a space where you can hit them. It is not new. Its time to change the attitude. And use cammarda please . He is better than others. If we want to finish 5th and i believe we can finish at 4 too 😂😩 we need to change the line up with players with more hunger. For Leao it doesn’t matter because he was already open to move. Not really enthusiastic over staying. I am a fan pf Milan at least for 35 years and i have seen the history it is actually a re-representation of late Berlusconi‘s era . Dont sell key players sell musah sell calabria Pobega and keep Adli. Wrong moves after wrong moves. By the way results with Lazio wouldnt change a thing because as i have seen these two games Milan will need 4 month to adapt if they can.

  5. If milan good management they will sign right now S Jwmenes amd Manu Kone
By selling Bennacer and RLC and Theo.
And Putt Liberale and Puslic no 10 role
    Kalalu lef,Adli Left
Terminate the Contract of Orihi and B Toure

  6. Fonseca should know better that the fullbacks cannot overlap the same time or else the already porous defence will become extremely porous. And if he is unaware of this fact, then already am a better manager than he is. At least when Milan is in transition one of the fullbacks should stick with the central defenders and one of the double pivot should not be fully commit to the attack.

  7. We must give all the player our support it been 2 games so far and we all want milan to win but it was not the case we are all disappointed, let turn on the page the player must do better milan is a very good team.all the player must remember that milan is name in world football it time to show what milan is.play with joy and make us happy you can do it and you will do it.milan is in my blood milan forever..
