Sky: Buongiorno meets agent in Milan with first offer planned

By Euan Burns -

Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno’s agent has met with the player in Milan as they await the first official offer from AC Milan for his services, a report claims.

As has been reported by Sky Sport Italia (via Pianeta Milan), the Rossoneri appear to have landed on Buongiorno as the ideal centre-back signing to bring more quality depth to the team.

Whilst the club simply needs more bodies at the back, Buongiorno is the sort of player who can force his way into a starting role for Milan and certainly be the long-term replacement for Simon Kjaer.

Torino are never too easy to deal with, though, as president Urbano Cairo is keen not to be deprived of one of his best players midway through what is proving to be a good season for the Granata.

Buongiorno and his agent have not met with Milan yet, they are just seeing if a deal is struck between the two clubs and deciding how they will approach that.

Milan are expected to include Lorenzo Colombo in the deal, and a bid of €25-30m could be sent by the Diavolo in the coming week to get the ball rolling.

Buongiorno has been one of the best defenders in Serie A so far this season.

  1. Can’t help but feel that we should have just extended romangnoli contract. Between the two players theres nothing and this money should be being put towards 2 quality players in midfield and upfront to bring this team on. Feels like we’re spending good money to tread water

    1. Fair point. However, I am not sure Romagnoli would have wanted to stay as an option C. We’ll never know. Plus Romagnoli is not the best fit for a high pressing team as he is not fast nor agile. (same could be said about Kjaer though)

      1. Kjaer knows how to position himself well, while Romagnoli often didn’t. He’s a much better fit for Sarri’s system where defenders work closely as a unit, while Pioli prefers defending 1 on 1.

  2. Do we actually need more bodies at the back? We now have Gabbia/Kjaer/Simic plus Theo. What will happen when Kalulu/Tomori/Thiaw comes back? Can we afford the luxury of having these players sitting on the bench? Are we preparing for a summer when Tomori will be sold back to England?

      1. The scudetto winning season has shown us that the Calabria – Thiaw – Tomori – Hernandez quartet works well. What changed then? The midfield. I wouldn’t want to downgrade the importance of defence, but defence doesn’t start at the back. We need a 6.

      2. Having good defense doesn’t mean getting a lot of defenders mate. Real Madrid have 4 centerbacks and they’ve a great defense. Milan will have like 8 centerbacks when really only half of that is enough. Boungiorno seems good and will add more quality but imo there’s enough quality in Kjaer Gabbia and Simic (Theo) to cover the defense until the injured centerbacks are back in a month time. They will be playing against likes of Udinese ,so you may not need Buongiorno for that. If it feels like team needing more numbers in defense then still I don’t see a need for investing so much on a defender right now. I’d get one on a 6 months loan.

    1. Kjaer and Gabbia will most likely not be part of the team next season.
Kjaer is getting old and can’t stay healthy, and Gabbia was barely used, sent on loan and only brought back because of the injury emergency.
So you’d basically have Tomori, Kalulu, Thiaw, Boungiorno, and Simic going into next season.
Theo needs to stick to what he is best at and that’s left back.
Tomori and Thiaw will take time to get back to top shape after being injured for so long, Kalulu will be out even longer than them, plus he can always play right back.

      1. Don’t forget that Gabbia is from the Milan academy which might just keep him at the club. (If I remember correctly 4 players can be registered from the academy without taking up space from elsewhere)

Kjaer might be getting old, but he has played more this season than Simic, Kalulu, Bartesaghi and Pellegrino combined (plus Gabbia of course). Injuries do happen (not just with Kjaer, see the list above). But even if his contract is not getting extended (if Gabbia stays) we’d have Tomori & Thiaw as starters with Kalulu/Simic/Gabbia available.

The only scenario in which signing Buongiorno should be a priority is if we are planning on selling at least one of the starters.

        I would say buying a 6 and a 9 should be priorities.

  3. With Thiaw pairing with him it would be great. I know nothing of the player but just want to say that we have hello and goodbye in central defense.
