Sky: Cardinale has ‘marathon meeting’ with management over mercato – the details

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale was in Milano today for a long meeting with the management regarding the transfer plans, according to a report.

Scrutiny is once again beginning to dial up amid what has been a slow start to the summer transfer window for the Rossoneri. Aside from the signing of Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid, the incoming operations currently seem to be experiencing an impasse that is starting to frustrate fans.

The likes of Youssouf Fofana and Stranhija Pavlovic continue to be heavily linked with numerous sources claiming that Milan are just a few million from closing both deals, which obviously heightens the impatience.

According to what is being reported by Sky’s Peppe Di Stefano (via MilanNews), there was a ‘blitz’ that took place in Milano today as Cardinale arrived in the city. He met with Paolo Scaroni, Giorgio Furlani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Geoffrey Moncada to talk strategy.

It wasn’t just a quick discussion either: Di Stefano states that it was a ‘marathon meeting’ that went from 1pm to 7pm. It was actually not the only one that has taken place during the summer either.

Cardinale was already in Europe and scheduled this important meeting, to discuss various things, including the mercato. His summer visits to Milan are never trivial, and now we will see if Milan will accelerate on the market.

  1. Next time we will hear, cardinale did a meeting for 12 hrs to buy more washed players at low cost or out of contract players so that we remain on 4th place for ages.. Why spend money when you can buy cheaper?? New business model for cardinale..

  2. One wonders what structure this club has. Seems like nothing can get done without the cowboy nodding his cowboy hat.

Scaroni is useless, furlani is useless, ibra is fresh from the pitch and moncada is a scout.

      1. I’m not a big fan of the management, but the criticism here is actually wild. To me, their primary objective is to acquire players who can enable Leao and Pulisic to make the most of their strengths.

Fofana and Pavlovic are brought in to reduce defensive responsibilities and prioritize attacking play. This should also help RLC a lot.

Excited for the season to start.

        1. We haven’t signed Fofana or Pavlovic YET and now because we haggle and wait and wait – other teams have jumped in (ManU and ATH Madrid) – which will at the very least drive the price up or snatch the player right from under us – like has happened so many times before. So ya the inexperience of the management team is currently showing

          1. Morata deal gets done in days. Dancing around the other two for weeks. I just don’t understand. I would understand trying to reduce the prices if we were in a bad financial state. We aren’t.

          2. But you act like this is Fifa manager mode. They just go and get the deal done. Even IF they lose those two they have shown to have other options in the past. They will be fine. It’s not like Fofana and Pavlovic are world class at this point lol.

  3. Lol maybe hire someone who already has experience as a manager? Like @ flyingturtle
already said Furlani is a finance guy, Ibra is new to this and the other one is a scouter not a negotiator or director. This stupid strategy with ,,Milan is looking for discount ‘’ or ,,have a verbal agreement with the player’’ is so useless and will make us missing good players. Let’s remember that Maldini without experience used to close deals without having a budget bigger than 30-40 mil and he had to use loan with option to buy.
Just pay 15 for Furklug 20 for Pavlo and 20 for Fofana that’s 55 mil in total and the merado is already closed.

    1. It requires Cardinale to open up the wallet. That is not the Milan way. We are too cheap to make championship investments.

      1. Marathon meeting 🤣🤣, let me laugh, this man doesn’t give great credit to enhancing the squad, ceiling of 20 millions for the amount spent on each calciatore, salary ceiling of 4.5 millions, surrounding when even a small competition pop up in the target, recruiting players as Musah a fodder just for marketing purpose, no thanks Cardinale, please sell the club as soon as possible

    2. Remind us again how long did it take for Maldini to close the CDK transfer? Or how it went with Botman? Oh right…

      1. And after sweet talking Renato Sanches for a couple of days he immediately told his agent to hang up on anyone but Maldini and jumped on a plane for Milan.

  4. Sorry but other then u hours meeting and bunch of speculations what else did we find out from this whole article?

Oh yeah and bunch of either Inter trolls here or usual AC Milan fans that are ready to cry and complain and act like they are subject matter experts providing their analysis and valuable opinions on otherwise wasted digital space

  5. I feel that’s what the meeting should be about, acquiring the speculated players, cause we really lacking behind, but with just little additions, luck, and a big gamble of sort with FONSECA.

  6. People wilding in here with every report.
Milan values a player at a certain price and they don’t deviate from their valuation.
They had the same approach last summer with RLC, Pulisic, Reijnders, Musah, Chukwueze and at the end they got them at the price they valued them.
Even Taremi deal that collapsed because of the player change of demands at the end, or Milan negotiating with the wrong agent. Porto wanted 30 mil, Milan waited them out and at the end Porto agreed to lower the price to 15 mil.
Every smart club haggle about the price. Only dumb clubs like ManUtd or some of the other EPL clubs overpay.
Real Madrid wanted Leny Yoro, personal terms agreed, and they offered 25 mil, bonuses included, for an 18 year old player with 1 good season behind him and only 1 year left on his contract. They told him and Lille, you can come now for 25m, next summer for free or don’t come at all. Plenty more fish in the sea.
ManUtd paid over 50 million for Leny Yoro, but now their fans are flexing that in the same week ManUtd bodied both Milan and Real Madrid by massively overpaying for Zirkzee and Leny Yoro.
Real Madrid wants Alphonso Davies, they have personal terms agreed. Bayern ask them for 50 mil. Real said you are not getting that for a player with 1 year left on his contract. You can either sell him at our price, he can come for free next summer, or he doesn’t have to come at all. Plenty more fish in the sea. Plus they already have a very good LB in Mendy.
Juventus had terms agreed for Calafiori and they offered Bologna 25 mil for a player with only 1 good season. Bologna asked for 50 mil, juve said: Nah, we good. Bologna found an EPL club to overpay and he is going to Arsenal for 45 mil.
Even the super rich PSG. 2 summers ago they wanted Skriniar, terms agreed, one year left on his contract. Inter wanted 60 mil. PSG refused to pay, and they signed him on a free transfer the following summer.
Only desperate and dumb clubs overpay.
But if you read the comment section here Milan is the only club in all sports that doesn’t wanna overpay and haggles about the price.
Stop overreacting on every report during a transfer window. Go outside, let sun hit your face, touch some grass. Will judge the summer market on September 1st.

    1. Agreed that we shouldn’t overpay for players, and clubs like real Madrid and Juve and PSG have refused to be held to ransom like you’ve pointed out. But those clubs have also aggressively gone after and acquired targets that they’ve identified as key required additions. For example, Madrid paid 103mil euro for Bellingham. Under bidding for every single target is becoming the norm for Milan rather than on an exception basis, and we’re becoming quite the joke. They are plenty fish in the sea yes but once we’ve identified which fish we want, at some point we are going to have to be able to show that we can close those deals effectively and consistently.

    2. And you know what you get for not overpaying. You get the players we have now. The players that will humiliate you at the san siro by letting inter walk all over us and win a trophy IN OUR FACES. You get players that finished so far behind inter that if they went on holiday mid season we still wouldn’t have caught them. The players that were humiliated by dortmund, psg and only just beat new champions league team Newcastle.

That’s what that buys you. Man United would dog walk this milan team and Iv been supporting milan since banter era. Over paying or not they get the players that are good enough we don’t. We always buy option B or C never A because we hate spending and we love saving.

The season coming we won’t touch inter with a 10 foot pole.

To think we were at one point a scudetto winning team to finishing so far behind inter that we might as well just forfeit mid season.

Screw this management and screw anyone who supports them. You can both see yourselves out.

For as long as they are here we will never stop criticism. Get used to it

      1. Well I can’t wait for the season to start and Milan to meet ManUtd in the UCL to see if they can dog walk this Milan.
Oh, wait, ManUtd didn’t qualify for the UCL. That’s such a shame 🫠. I guess even with overpaying they can’t qualify for the UCL, but at least they can celebrate stealing transfer targets from Milan and Real Madrid by overpaying in July.

      2. “For as long as they are here we will never stop criticism.” Oh don’t worry, man – that’s the only part of your crew’s rantings we understand.

    3. Preach…people get way too attached to players and that is simply not how you get good value in the market. On top of that…no one has sold yet…they likely won’t know if they are off bennacers salary until the end of the window…they want to get off Florenzi, and origi of course and likely have feedback from fonseca about what he sees thus far. Meeting makes sense….

    4. We overpayed Chukuweze, yeah I agree with you, don’t be a dumb club, but some times you gotta splash big amount on a single player for exemple 45 millions on Calafiori, to make the quantum leap, otherwise you will stay behind for the Scudetto race and kicked out of the champions league group stage

    5. Nobody is saying we should overpay. The price monaco and redbull are asking are normal. We could come near them weeks ago. Instead? Nothing

  7. We have the worst management of the big teams in Italy by far.

Americans who know nothing about football running our team to the ground. Bankers and what not.

    1. Ah, bankers…. You mean like the billionaire Chinese one who was a big part of the recent success of the other cr@ppy one in Milan?

  8. In the meeting:
Cardinale: “Okay guys, find players with last year of contract. For this category, no more than 15 mil, regardless the position. For non expiring players, for defender maximum 15 mil, midfielders maximum 20 mil. And for attackers, lets surprise the media and fans. Instead of Fullkrug, lets approach silently Scamacca, and offer them in exchange Ballo Toure and Origi. That’s two players for 1 player, how can Atalanta refuse? Or heck, lets also try to approach Julian Alvarez. I heard that he wanna leave City. But ask for 20 mil, okay?! Because we are in stronger position since the player wanna move away.”
Dont be too serious. Just a hypothetically joking, guys (“hypothetical” and “joking” combined)

  9. Hahahaha hahahaha now people have started understanding my points since this hungry management took over and am not sorry to say that because whenever you read about Milan you will notice they always refer to us as European giant. Yes we are giant by spending good money to buy quality players not this way this present management is doing. If they don’t have money to carry Milan quality they can buy como which is their level of club not Milan.
We rush to grab Morata who’s tired and our shoulders are high because we bought Morata. Milan quality and class were above the Madrid of today but see where we are now. I bet you our management is not ready to spend any quality money to buy good players but we are ready to grab every free agent who’s ready to accept 2m or 1.5m salary annually.
Watch out for the next story which they will use to divert our attention from this transfer season, they will focus on stadium stories which is a big lie to deceive us while inter Juve Napoli and the rest even Atlanta are busy building their team with good players.
Milan is enjoying the good old days pedigree and we are very far from reality.
Spend money buy good players and you will see success again. The truth is that the success of nowadays Milan is from we the fans who always go extra lengths to push our club forward.

    1. Inter spends maximum 30m for their best players m? Bastoni, lautaro, berrela, pavard. Demarco 5 mil. Someone let hakan play out his contract…so free…dumfries 15mil. If inter doesn’t spend good money to buy quality players then why aren’t they winning? In fact they have sold more than bought over the last 5 years for a profit. Milan has lost about 300m over the same time period. You can’t buy good players if you can’t give them a good salary and you can’t give a good salary if you don’t make money by selling players…

  10. Our management has til the end of the mercato to change the narrative but as it stands now they have not delivered, if we don’t see results soon Cardinale needs to sack the lot.

  11. OMG an exec had a meeting!

Maybe I’m just one of those dumb Americans, but I’m pretty sure that’s what execs do.

    Sigh.

    1. And the experts commenting on this site would have done a better job in 15 minutes, right? As they ARE the financial experts here. Not to mention the experts on running successful football clubs. 🙂

  12. Director: Sire we have nearly sign good player, it’s just few millions away sire.

Card: Okay use your fund first, we will reimburst it at the end. We have nore important thing to do including building new football arena and new merchandise to raise fund for club?

  13. There’s a difference between overpaying and being cheap. For 18-20 millions Fofana is a steal and RedBird are being cheap here. Same can be said for Pavlovic or Lazar (both could be closed for 18-20 millions plus add ons). Those are really low sums in today’s market and prices.

Can’t say the same for Chukwueze who was also in final year of his contract but that did not stop RedBird to overpay and make him most expensive transfer of the summer now did it?

RedBird are also stalling with contract extentions saying they’ll address the matter by the end of mercato. Like they’re waiting for offers for our prized assets to cash in. Inter (who are reportedly on the verge od bankrupcy for years now) didn’t waste time extending their stars and for wages much higher than we (who are reportedly financially the most sound club in Serie A) are offering to our stars.

It all looks like RedBird have no money for transfers allocated. They even tried to haggle Morata’s clause of 13 millions asking for payment in installments.

    1. “It all looks like RedBird have no money for transfers allocated. ”

RedBird’s money is irrelevant. How many times do people need to be told that? Milan’s money isn’t RedBird’s money and vice versa. It shouldn’t be that hard to understand but clearly some people still don’t get it. Oh well… Just keep on banging the nail with a screwdriver while others use a hammer.

      1. In Forest Gump’s Jenny words: “Are you stup!d or somethin?”

Allocated. I wrote allocated. Means they have put no transfer resources in place. It does not mean their own money. Read please🙏

    2. They already allocate 50m euro every season. But well all player price got inflated now thanks to oil money contribution. The best way to get quality player with cheap price only scout them and get them before they get famous example RM get vini when he was teenager for 30-40m euro and now his market value more than 100m euro
