Sky journalist explains the difficulties Theo Hernandez had during first half of 2023-24

Sky journalist Peppe Di Stefano has shed some light on the three things that he thinks have caused Theo Hernandez’s resurgence in form over the past few weeks.

Theo is back to being one of the most decisive players again after fluctuating performance levels in the first half of the 2023-24 campaign, given that he has 11 goal contributions in 2024 alone with three goals and eight assist.

Many believe that everything clicked after the Frenchman’s conversion to central defender when there was a defensive emergency between October to December, because when he then went back out to the flank it seemed to light a spark.

He has five goals and 10 assists so far in 2023-24 compared to the four goals and five assists of last season. He is in line to potentially surpass his best season with Rossoneri (2020-21) when he finished with eight goals and as many assists.

Speaking on Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube channel outside Casa Milan, the Sky journalist Peppe Di Stefano spoke about Theo’s recent run of games and in particular what changed between first and second part of the season.

“Sometimes he is so strong that he seems to ridicule his opponents. In the first part of the season he seemed to have disappeared. Then he turns, switches, something clicks in his head,” he said.

“Maybe a few more games with the captain’s armband. We cannot fail to consider having lost two elements and perhaps even three.

“He had lost Castillejo – who was no longer there with him and who was a great friend. He especially lost Brahim, his car companion, and finally there was the lack of his mentor Paolo Maldini.

“The sum of these three things made him live a little disoriented for months, in my opinion. Now he is smiling and happy… you can see that he is psychologically well.”

Meanwhile, there is some worrying talk of Bayern Munich potentially readying a bid for Theo, but the management know they can demand a nine-figure sum for him.
