Sky: Milan to bolster defence with Bundesliga star – the details

AC Milan are linked with Union Berlin defender Diogo Leite as an option to provide more quality depth to the back line.

As reported by Sky Sport Italia, the Portuguese defender would be keen on joining the Rossoneri but the Berlin-based side are not going to let him go without getting their desired fee.

Supposedly, it would take around €18m for Union Berlin to part ways with the former Braga and Porto star. At 25 years old, he could prove to be an option in the defence for many years.

The fact that Leite is left-footed means Milan are automatically interested as there is a need for a left-footed centre-back in the squad.

He played 32 appearances last season and has the sort of physical frame that Milan want. His good injury record is also a major attraction.

Whilst it is something that can be overstated, Leite would presumably benefit from joining up with his compatriot Paulo Fonseca and there are other Portuguese speakers in the squad too.

He is comfortable playing on the right or the left of a central defensive pairing but the assumption is that Milan would want him on the left.

Any deals such as this one are likely to accelerate once the club has announced Paulo Fonseca as coach.

  1. Seeing this photo makes me think we’d need something more… Manly. He doesn’t seem like a CB that arouses fear into the opponent strikers. But then again… Pretty sure Kalulu & Thiaw don’t have that effect either and he probably couldn’t do worse than those two.

  2. So, what will happen to Pellegrino , he has been sent on loan to get playing time and have Seria A experience . he is a left footed defender but the management to to splash 18m on another foreign defender as backup

where is the sense in this?

    1. They’ve seen enough of him to know he’s not good enough. I saw that already in the first match he played. The better question is: why the EFF did they buy him in the first place? Whose fault was that? And have they learned anything from that?

  3. There’s a player who is now reportedly priced at 10 million and will definetly will be leaving his club. He can replace hernandez if he leaves. Can play lb/cb. He’ll be worth 40 million plus after a few seasons with us. He has more of a maldini level headed defense attitude compared to hernandez. Will want to give his current club the middle finger for letting him rot on the bench in the epl. Everyone will laugh as ive mentioned him before. But kieren tierney for me is a good signing. Look at the current scottish players in serie a. All have done well. Milan have quite a few English speaking players so can settle in and can hang out with his scottish mates in his spare time. Watch him at the euros. Hes been better than Robertson too lately in the scotland squad. And yeah i am scottish. Cheap fills in cb and lb. Lots of experience. Perfect signing

    1. Tierney is a great player but I’m not prepared too even think about Theo replacements 😀

Great Scotland side this! Could do well this summer; good luck.

    2. As a split time Milan-Arsenal fan, I like Tierney. Great character, really endeared himself to the fanbase. Unfortunately he doesn’t quite suit Arteta’s style of play and doesn’t have a fantastic injury record, that’s what’s kept him from playing more, and I’m not sure he’d quite fit Milan either. I don’t think he’ll go for as low as 10m, anyway.

  4. I’ve got a soft spot for Union (I @*!+& love Berlin) and have seen a fair bit of this lad and like him. I’d still rather Buongiorno though.

All rumours obviously but I’m a bit confused by the idea we need a CB.

Tomori (rightly in my opinion) is first choice, Gabbia has surely earned the right to play 30 games a season, Kalulu is fit again, Thiaw was poor last season but he did have the injury and I think he’s a better centre half so could shine with a DM next year. Simic (I believe) will sign his deal but then needs minutes so might leave on loan, but if we are signing a CB, then surely a CB has to leave. Who and why?

    1. -Tomori needs a strong cast around him.
-Kalulu’s fitness still raises many questions – look how long it’s taking for Bennacer to rediscover his form.
-Thiaw is still raw, also fitness issues.
-Simic will play at the U23 if they get his renewal over the line.

More questions than answers. Milan need a left-footed CB, which this guy seems to be.

    2. Yeah I tend to agree with you. We played most of last season without a true CDM, but the blame seems to be entirely on the CBs for conceding goals. We still don’t have a true CDM (or CAM) on the roster, we have like 5 CMs. CB shouldn’t be priority…

  5. Which is why Simic doesn’t want to extend his contact 😮‍💨

Milan is loosing its Italian identity and turning into Taïder and Biabiany Inter.

    1. You do realize that Simic isn’t Italian and in fact is a German born Serbian with no connection whatsoever to Dario Simic and was bought in german football in august 2022, so less than 2 years ago ? right. Even if I do think it would be a great shame to lose Simic we wouldn’t really lose any identity there if he were to leave us.
