Sky: Milan begin talks with Cagliari over goalkeeper after Sportiello injury

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have begun talks with Cagliari over the possibility of signing goalkeeper Simone Scuffet because of an injury to Marco Sportiello, according to a report.

Sportiello was expected to start Milan’s friendly against Manchester City on Saturday night at Yankee Stadium but he was excluded from the squad entirely, and it quickly became apparent that he had suffered an injury.

Calciomercato.com reported that the veteran goalkeeper would not be available to the new coach Paulo Fonseca due to an accidental injury suffered in the hotel during the morning, which resulted in a trauma to his left hand.

Lorenzo Torriani got the nod between the sticks instead and did well considering his lack of experience, but the latest news suggests that Sportiello’s injury is a bit more serious than just a scratch.

According to the latest from Sky, Milan have begun talks with Cagliari about the idea of signing Simone Scuffet because of Sportiello’s injury. The 28-year-old played 31 games for them last season, and is under contract until June 2026.

Scuffet was born in Udinese and played for their academy, and after loans to Como, Kasimpasa and Spezia he went to APOEL in Cyprus and CFR Cluj in Romania, before returning to Italy with Cagliari last year and becoming the starter.

    1. Agree – we’ve gone from zero activity to suddenly wanting to buy players we don’t even need. Or it could just be media fake news (as usual).

        1. Talking about right back. I think we are much more covered there. Kaluku calabria and Terraciano should be moved to right back and buy Left back for Thoe backup instead of buying g another right back in Royal Emerson and playing Terraciano right footed as left back.

          1. We could also promote Jimenez or Bartesaghi for the bench in some matches. They both could benefit from a year in Serie C but they seem on the verge of being ready for first team football

    2. Disagree. If we’re serious about winning anything this season we need someone with some experience behind injury prone Mike. The depth chart can’t be Maigana, Nava and Raveyre. When Mike has his eventual injury, would we want one of these kids starting for two months in the league and CL?

      1. This. I mean… What are the odds of us having “another donnarumma” fairytale? Just loan some experienced keeper from somewhere to be safe.

      2. That 2 kid actually not that bad . If we give them chance maybe they can success like donnarumma . Remember miha give chance donna when he was teenager. It is better choice than wasting budget buy GK from other club just for 2 month

  1. Sportiello so far has been an awful signing. He missed 3 months last year because of an injury, and he will miss another 2 months already this season. He was supposed to be a security blanket behind the injury prone Maignan, but he has been more injured than Maignan and not available when you actually need him.

    1. Sportiello has actually played well when he has played. But it’s true. Injuries have got to him. Scuffet isn’t bad as second choice.

  2. Suffet is actually a good goalkeeper and very underrated, we need an experienced goalkeeper because Mike gets very easy injured.
