AC Milan are searching for a new midfielder and the latest name that has entered their orbit is Mats Wieffer of Feyenoord, according to a report.
According to Sky, the Milan management are expecting to quickly close the signing of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, and they have set their sights on his compatriot Wieffer who had another excellenet season at Feyenoord.
The 24-year-old was one of the regular starters under Arne Slot but given that he has left for Liverpool there are some doubts about some of the stars at Feyenoord, who may also look to take a step forward in their careers.
Wieffer plays predominantly as a defensive midfielder in front of the back four which is an area that Milan have been looking to address given the lack of a natural player for that role in the squad at present.
The midfielder scored six goals last season for the Rotterdam club: five in the league and one in the Champions League, in the home defeat against Atletico Madrid. He made 42 total appearances, with four assists.
Fabrizio Romano adds that Milan have already made contact with Wieffer’s agents, and that discussions took place again in recent days. He is one of the names on the shortlist for the midfield, with the player also attracted by the Rossoneri and talks to continue on the price tag.
He’d be decent, as he’s actually a DM that can even play CB. However I reckon management will pick Fofana for 20mn as Wiffers like to cost 30m+
Not sure we can get Fofana, he will get offers from big clubs for way more money that we offer his, Wiffers is a good player but they won’t sell him for less than 30 mil and Liverpool might come to take him considering that Slott was his coach too

He is good, will be our best midfielder if we sign him. I think they are reverting from the Fofana deal because Enrique wants him at PSG.

This is a good defensive midfielder, strong, young and still good goal contribution. Will definitely fit all the criteria but he is going to be expensive at least 30 mil, I would give up at RB position to take him and Fofana. Tijjani-Weiffer-Foffana would be a strong midfield but I m convinced we won’t get any of them.
I’d give up on Fofana.
As much as Fofana seems to be a good player, he is mainly a ball carrier (in the NT he has been paired with Tchouaméni and Camavinga who are very good defensively) and we already have too many ball carriers. Unless we manage to sell Musah, in which case I’d go for Fofana.
I agree on giving up the RB position, we already have like 5 RBs and perhaps new tactics can make better use of the ones we have (Calabria was also a victim of the inverted fullback idea), but given the recent statments and the relation between Fonseca and Florenzi, it seems we are going to go for a RB.
Perhaps we should consider selling one or 2 players not named Theo or Leao.
There would be no reason to sell Musah. He’s still only 20 or 21, and won’t generate the funds necessary to justify a sale. I know people are super hot on him, but just think of CDk. He shouldn’t be written off after just on season. I think the more likely player to depart is Bennacer, as he has been at the club for a while, the next renewal would cost us a bit, and there is interest from Arabia, meaning he’d bring in decent profit that could be reinvested. Not advocating for a sale, just saying.
I don’t necessarly think that Musah has no room for improvement, on the contraire I’m generally very patient with new players. But I think his signing was a mistake as I didn’t solve the problem we had (defensive midfield) and only filled a position already filled (central midfield which was filled with Reijnders, Loftus-Cheek, Bennacer and Krunic). So if we want a new central midfield (for some reason), might as well give up our current weakest central midfielder.
I considered selling Bennacer because he is injury prone, but only for north of 40M€. However you should also have to consider that he is our last midfielder from the scudetto winning side, that he did show that he is willing to stay and he is currently our only midfielder who can defend.

It can’t happen without a sale. At the moment it looks like the likeliest candidates are Mike, Theo or Bennacer. If the club also wants a new RB, along with the above three mentioned, it will have to be one of Theo or Mike, as they’d generate the most funds (and we’d also have to replace them). If we really are getting Zirkzee, and we really are interested in, and get, Wieffer, to avoid a major sale we will have to be really economical with our CB “upgrade”. This means a free transfer. Or vice versa if we get Buongiorno. We will need a free transfer in midfield. It’s a puzzle and it will be interesting to see how the club solves it.

P.S. Buongiorno’s cost might be lowered by the inclusion of Salad AND Pobega. I made this comment before and people were saying they’d never seen two players included in a deal for another. Yet, Juventus is about to do this for Douglas Luiz by including McKennie and Iling-Junior.
Need someone Musah can grow with and learn from. I’m OK with either Fofana or Weifer. Fofana might hit the ground running given the Frenchies at Milan.
