Sky: Milan have Girona striker as back-up plan in case Zirkzee deal collapses

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are keeping a parallel option open in case things turn sour in their attempts to sign Joshua Zirkzee, according to a report.

According to the latest update from Sky, Milan are continuing to work to quickly close the arrival of Zirkzee who seems to be getting ever closer to joining. A member of his entourage is in Italy, and it could be ahead of decisive meeting to try to reach an agreement on the commission issue.

The €15m requested by the Bologna striker’s agents is considered by the Rossoneri management to be too much and thus they are trying to negotiate it downwards, but in the meantime they are also preparing for all eventualities by keeping alternatives open.

While the technical director Geoffrey Moncada travelled to London over the weekend, Milan kept the line open over Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian striker – who is also on the radar of Napoli – contributed to Girona’s qualification for the Champions League with 24 league goals.

The economic conditions of the deal for Dovbyk mean that Milan would be able to close the operation without many issues if they had to turn to him, though at the moment he remains firmly a back-up plan to Zirkzee.

  1. It’s funny because I suggested Dovbyk as a backup plan (although I wasn’t the first to do so).
    So let’s try this:
Go for Hojbjerg for the defensive midfielder position ! Or Ederson or Hjulmand.

    1. Dovbyk should be our number one target and I’ve been saying this for months. Zirkzee is a 2nd striker and not similar to Giroud or Ibra.

We need a target striker and Dovbyk is the ideal striker. Good link up play with the wingers and midfield, he’s good in the air and in the penalty box and he’s good at holding up the ball to bring our wingers and midfielders in the game and his finishing is very impressive with both feet.

Zirkzee has only on decent season and not with the risk for such a high price tag and agent commission.

No to Zirkzee and Jovic. They are not the type of CF we need.

      1. Zee is a complimentary piece to our wingers, able to hold up play and participate in the build up as he had shown at Bologna.

Dovbyk is more of a pure striker. I think with our system Zee might work out better.

  2. I don’t see why Guirassy is off the table. Even if Bayern and Dortmund have the sights on him, we should still have some sort of advantage over Bayern seeing we can promise him a spot in starting 11.

  3. If we can get Dovbyk and Guirassy for 35+17 mil that would be better then Zirkzee for 55 and extending with Jovic. Dovbyk/Guirassy are classical strikers, no 9s like Giroud and Jovic, with imposing physique. Zirkzee is best as second forward, a no 10 who drops low and combines with wingers and the No 9. If Fonseca will continue with 4-2-3-1 or play 4-3-3, Dovbyk/Guirassy makes more sense.

Althou, Zirkzee as an offensive midfielder behind Dovbyk…. That would be the dream. But no way Milan can caugh up 55+35 for those two 🙁
