Sky: Milan’s probable XI for Lecce encounter – Pioli opts for all-out attack

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will be up against Lecce tomorrow afternoon and Stefano Pioli is set to make some changes to the starting eleven. According to a report this evening, a very attacking-minded Rossoneri team will step onto the San Siro pitch.

Pioli and his men have won the last six games and with the derby just a few weeks away, full focus is on at least maintaining the distance to Inter. That way, the Nerazzurri might not be able to celebrate the Scudetto in the derby, which might sound petty (but still important).

In any case, as reported by Sky, Pioli is preparing four changes to the starting eleven for tomorrow’s game. Malick Thiaw is suffering from a minor inflammation, Ismael Bennacer had the flu earlier this week and Ruben Loftus-Cheek is suspended.

Theo Hernandez is back from his suspension, though, which is indeed a huge boost for Milan. Due to the aforementioned absence, it will be a very attacking-minded XI with Yacine Adli and Tijjani Reijnders teaming up in midfield, while Christian Pulisic will take the No.10 role.

Probable Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria (Florenzi), Gabbia, Tomori, Hernandez; Adli, Reijnders; Chukwueze, Pulisic, Leao; Giroud.

Davide Calabria vs. Alessandro Florenzi is the only open battle, but the captain is ahead for now (a decision should be made tomorrow).

  1. I’m worried about lack of defensiveness in this double-pivot pairing (I think it ought to be Reijnders and Musah) and overworking Pulisic at AM, as he will need to do a lot more running to press in that position, but I’m also very curious about Leao-Pulisic-Chukwueze.

  2. If Lecce have the same attacking mindset that they had with Roma, this will be a crazy game. That said, considering that this is away from home for them, it’s more likely that Lecce will play more conservatively.

Very curious to see how it will go since it’s an unbalanced formation. Expect a lot of back and forth. If Florenzi was playing instead of Calabria, this would have been the most attacking formation I can think of having with this team, almost like a Football Manager type of formation

  3. Love this formation. But it will look much better with a proper defensive midfielder and center back. Pulisic always seemed more of an attacking midfielder than a winger to me. It’s not fair to judge based on only one game, but I hope he can actually do some playmaking which LFC doesn’t seem to do so much

    1. Nah that’s facts bro RLC can score but the fast passes and dribbles he’s not the best in attack. I think pulisic will be crazy in this formation with chuckwu and leao in form💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

    1. What makes you think Pioli doesn’t know the formation when he’s the one who manage the daily training while you playing video games in your room. There’s a big chance PIoli already know about the formation and did it in training but not yet used it for real match because many factors like the chemistry between new and old players not yet reach some level or he wants new players to adapt with basic formation and role first.

      1. Im not saying that pioli doesnt know the best, im sure he knows better than us all as he indeed works with the players on a daily basis and it will come down to match tactics from match to match whether its the right formula or not but i for one was always expecting us to field pulisic in the cam role with chukwueze on the right side so im also quite intrigued to see how it pans out as well. Whether it works for that match only time will tell but it could turn out to be a deadly trident behind giroud but its certainly also fair to point out the transition time of new players and whether people likes it or not, decisions is often down to mili seconds and how the players understands eachothers movements and the right moments to act. In the greater scheme things doesnt happen over night,

        1. Pulisic never been used much as CAM in Dortmund or Chelsea either. He mostly plays as LW which he himself said in a interview that is his favorite position.

I personally think it would be a waste of Pulisic speed and dribble if he plays as CAM. Because once he got the ball he will get surrounded with less space to dribble by the opponents while in the wing he will get more opportunity to do 1 v 1.

It’s like last season when Pioli tried Leao to play more in the center like a CAM and it wasn’t working because Leao used less of his speed and dribble which are his main weapon.

And yes, everything doesn’t happen over night. So we’ll see if this formation work or not i guess…

          1. Well this is his career stats in regard of positions so….i do agree though that he has said that his preferrred position is the left wing.

            Right Winger 142 22 31
            Left Winger 86 23 14
            Attacking Midfield 61 17 16
            Centre-Forward 11 3 3
            Right Midfield 10 – 2
            Second Striker 6 2 –
            Central Midfield 1 1 1

No it isnt like playing leao centrally because the american has already proven he can play in that position but time will tell.

    2. Always thought Pulisic would be better suited in the median. Give him few games there and I’m sure pay even more dividends.

      1. The problem with RLC though is his playmaking, he doesn’t have that quality of passing à la De Bruyne, Muller,…. If he had that we will be looking at one of the best AMs in the world right now.

  4. I can’t wait to see how this looks. My only concern is in transition with Reijnders and Adli. If Puli can track back more than arLC usually does, we should be ok.

I wonder if Leece is going to sit deep.

  5. Pulisics’ contribution in the attacking midfielder role:

    Creative passes

Availability at the top of the box for pullback passes from the wingers

Ability to draw fouls in the defensive and middle thirds
