Sky: Milan’s probable XI to face Udinese – Tomori keeps his place; Leao the striker

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli looks set to field Rafael Leao as a centre-forward against Udinese as he has to deal without his two natural strikers.

MilanNews reported how Zlatan Ibrahimovic – as well as Hakan Calhanoglu and Ante Rebic – underwent check-ups after all three left the field during last night’s win over Roma.

Ibrahimovic has suffered a problem with his adductor muscle and will be re-evaluated with an MRI examination in about ten days. The Turkey international, on the other hand, had tests which showed a problem with the medial flexor muscle of the left thigh, but Rebic should make the game.

According to the latest from broadcaster Sky Italia, a back four of Davide Calabria, Simon Kjaer, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez will be in front of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie will be the double pivot, with Alexis Saelemaekers, Brahim Diaz and Ante Rebic acting behind Leao.

Probable Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Tonali, Kessie; Saelemaekers, Brahim, Rebic; Leao.

  1. both Leao and Rebic is not effective as lone striker in 4231. When Ibra and Calha injured, change to 433 (upfront : Rebic-Leao-Diaz) or 442 (upfront : Rebic-Leao). if 442, use Theo as LM so Romag can play as LB. Even Calha can play as LM in 442. The point is we will have effective strikers in their best position

    1. First thing first.

You know that it’s harder to just switch formation 3 days before a match instead of just switching a player to other position? Suggesting a change from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 doesn’t make any sense at all, especially that we haven’t played in that formation for a while. (same argument goes to 4-3-3)

Secondly, Leao had done reasonably well deputizing for Ibra when he was out injured/covid. And if Rebic isn’t fit, we could potentially have Hauge play as well. Which is still a better solution than Leao-Rebic leading the line in a makeshift 4-4-2 formation.

      Just my 2c.
