Sky: Pioli could make three changes to Milan’s XI for Newcastle clash

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will take on Newcastle in the first round of the Champions League group stage on Tuesday. Following the defeat against Inter, Stefano Pioli could make three changes to the starting XI.

The Rossoneri will need to bounce back with a good display against the English side after the humiliation in the derby. Fikayo Tomori will be back from his suspension and he will certainly play from the first minute, replacing Simon Kjaer.

According to Sky Italia, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli could make an additional two changes to the line-up. Samuel Chukwueze is set to get his first start on the right flank, as Christian Pulisic needs some rest, and there could also be a change in midfield.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Rade Krunic and Tijjani Reijnders have all been playing a lot at the start of this season and one of them will be rested, per the report. Pioli will likely give Tommaso Pobega or Yunus Musah a chance, therefore.

  1. I dunno why everyone is blaming Pioli. Which managers could do anything against inter with this squad….Like which defender could stop Thuram? If we play 10 match against them now, we lose at least 8 or 9 of them unfortunately with this defenders.

What pissed me off most is Chukwuaze. In last goal, he lost the ball and didn’t even chase the player back, considering he was fresh.
Every game he comes on, too scared to go forward. Always passing backwards. Zero confidence he has. Giving me CDK vibes

    1. I don’t know what tactics can save us from Thiaw terrible mistakes that gave inter a 0-2 lead. I don’t think it’s necessarily the squad level, although Inter’s is slightly better. It’s more that all their mid players stepped up, and ours stepped down.

      1. The tactics is to not play a high line when your defenders are slow. Inter have acerbi, they know he isn’t fast, hence you don’t see him far out of his box. Play to your strengths. Pioli thinking Calabria is Phillip Lahm or Kimmich and moving him to midfield.. oh please

        1. If he wants to make Calabria a midfielder it’s okay but making him play two positions at the same time against a counter attacking team is madness. It worked against Roma because they were not quick on transition. I think it’s better to play our usual 4231 when playing fast opponents.

    2. We will make an assesment only if Chuk is a starter at least 2-3 games ahead. You cant assest a player who came as a sub, with the team trailing and tired, and played for the first time in the biggest derby in the world

    3. Ask yourself how many serie A teams inter can score 5 against. Not even big teams. Inter can’t beat Lecce nor bologna by scoring 5. Also ask yourself which coach will lose any derby 5 straight times. Even if it’s Everton Vs Liverpool they won’t lose 5 straight. Have we really become this mediocre??

    4. Have you watched where are our midfielders for all the goals. Knowing the fact that both CBs are slow they should have played 4 or 5in the back line.
Inter gone to 5 when they dont have the ball.

Its complete tactical problems not the difference between the level of players. It cannot be 5-1 for level of players.
Also not substituting Tomori in Roma match, Pioli paid a big price here and its a basic thing the Pioli team should do before playing a derby or Champions league.
People who are opposing thuram, arnautovic, now you can see the difference.
With the pace of Leao, Thuram, Chukweze, we could have been better in front 3 atleast

  2. Pulisic and Loftus should start since they know the league well. In regards to inter Pioli needs to understand that man marking doesn’t work since they have faster players. Even the first goal Thuram easily out dribbled Thiaw and crossed the ball.

  3. OK 1 very bad game. Let’s see what will happen next. I don’t want to say that this season will be bad after this one bad game.

    But let’s be honest :

    1. It is NOT Krunić’s fault. He is a CDM and he is doing his job. OK he is not perfect but he is working hard. His job is NOT to be creative – to create the gameplay

    2. Say what you want but RLC is below average. Milan is just an attempt to restart his career but we have no playmaker. Tonali was the playmaker and he is gone. The board sold him..
Even worse – we could buy Frattesi, but we didn’t. At his current form he is the best italian midfielder (if you saw his last Italy games or the previous games for Inter)
Maybe it’s time to give a proper chance Musah and Adli?

    3. Pioli can do whatever he wants…he has no option as a striker. Okafor doesn’t look like a typical 9. Thuram was the one to buy, we didn’t buy him. Maybe Jović will suprise us? Who knows.

    4. Defence – Theo is out of form, Thiaw looked horrible. Maybe time for Bartesaghi ?

    1. on 2…He is good in and around the box. I actually think hed be a decent striker. Reijnders was supposed to be the playmaker with RLC playing a 10 / shadow striker ish role. Reijnder was just quicker so he started being the one high in the press also and basically took over most responsibilities and lost track of things.

They got way too caught up getting away with pushing numbers and being able to stop other teams 1v1 if needed.

Musah won’t be stationary in there. But first game starting champions league doesn’t seem like a pioli think to do.
