Sky: Pioli tries new formation ahead of Inter clash – no Leao or Rebic; Calhanoglu in advanced role

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has tried a different formation in training ahead of Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina against Inter, a report claims.

The Rossoneri will be looking to secure their first league win over Inter in four years and put a huge dent in the Scudetto hopes of their neighbours, who have struggled for form since the turn of the year.

Milan on the other hand have had an upturn which has essentially coincided with the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the beginning of January, having not lost a competitive game yet in 2020.

With the Swede having been kept out of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona due to flu and muscle fatigue, he is back fit for the game against Inter with many assuming he would partner Rafael Leao up front in a 4-4-2.

However, according to Sky Italia – as cited by MilanNews.it – Pioli could try yet another new formation against Antonio Conte’s side. On Friday morning’s training session at Milanello, the Rossoneri manager tried a 4-4-1-1 with Leao and Ante Rebic not featuring.

Instead, Hakan Calhanoglu in the role of playmaker behind Ibrahimovic, with Giacomo Bonaventura deployed on the left side of the midfield, the report adds.
