Matteo Gabbia is getting closer to extending his contract with AC Milan, a report claims, and it should be a long-term deal for the defender.

Gabbia returned to Milan after a few months at Villarreal and given the defensive emergency at the time he instantly found himself getting regular minutes, impressing with his performances and becoming one of the most reliable players in a tough season.

That has continued into the current campaign too. Despite the fact Strahinja Pavlovic was signed from Red Bull Salzburg and started the season as Fikayo Tomori’s partner, Gabbia has earned his spot back by again being consistently impressive.

According to Sky, he is serious candidate to become Milan’s captain for at least the game against Udinese on Saturday. Theo Hernandez is suspended and Davide Calabria is injured, so the armband going to Gabbia is a ‘concrete possibility’, even if Rafael Leao and Mike Maignan are candidates too.

Moreover, after being called up to the Italian national team, the agents of the Milan academy product should meet with management this week to renew his contract until 2030 with a salary that is double the current €1m net per season he receives.

He would be the first Rossoneri player to have a contract that will run into the new decade and it would take him until he is 31 years of age, given his 25th birthday will come later this month. The armband at the weekend would be an added gift.

  1. In the near future definitely a great prospect, but still it’s a bit early for him to be the captain – both as leadership and experience.

Mike is the most influential and deserving one but sadly it doesn’t make sense to make the GK a captain nowadays with all the communication with refs and so on.

Puli is a real leader in the game but he is too timid with his teammates as we’ve seen in the last game, but also overall – haven’t seen him more than a couple of times to push the others to press/get back to defend, etc.

Theo has the characteristics of a leader, but he has the tendency to a childish behavior every now and then. For the moment I think it’s best to keep the band.

I think Morata next season will be either the cap or 1st deputy. He has the best characteristics from the bunch but it would be strange to give it to the new joiner right ahead.

  2. Milan had their share of great captains, but when thinking about an idle captain the name Roy Keane from ManU comes to mind. We need someone that that can actually shout at players in game, who commands respect but also fear from the other players. Is Gabbia that person? I’m not sure. To be fair, I’m still entirely sold on him being our starting CB.
