Sky: Comparing the spending of Inter and Milan under Inzaghi and Pioli

By Oliver Fisher -

The nature of the Milan derby is such that the rivalry often extends beyond the pitch itself and becomes a comparison of philosophies too.

Sky (via PianetaMilan) compared the numbers of Milan and Inter when it comes to the transfer windows that Simone Inzaghi and Stefano Pioli have had, and how much was spent by the red and blue half of the city.

Starting with the latter, Edin Dzeko, Joaquin Correa, Matteo Darmian, Zinho Vanheusden and Denzel Dumfries arrived during Inzaghi’s first year. Inter spent €42.55m against €205m in revenue.

Last year the Nerazzurri spent €70m with the arrivals of Robin Gosens, the loan of Romelu Lukaku, Kristjan Asllani and Raoul Bellanova and the permanent signing of Correa.

This summer, however, there were six paid-for signings: Benjamin Pavard, Yann Bisseck, Yann Sommer, Francesco Acerbi, the loan of Davide Frattesi and the permanent signing of Asllani for a total sum of €64.25m.

In Pioli’s first year, Milan spent €93m against €5m in revenue with Fikayo Tomori, Mike Maignan, Sandro Tonali, Olivier Giroud, Yacine Adli, Fode Ballo-Touré and Marko Lazetic arriving, plus the paid loans of Brahim Diaz, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Junior Messias, Alessandro Florenzi and Pietro Pellegri.

The following year the expenditure was approximately €55m with €11m in revenue received. Charles De Ketelaere, Malick Thiaw, the loan of Aster Vranckx and the permanent signings of Florenzi and Messias were done, as well as the purchase of Devis Vasquez.

Finally, the revolution of the summer: €114m spent with €69m in revenue . The arrivals: Christian Pulisic, Samuel Chukwueze, Noah Okafor, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Marco Pellegrino, Tijjani Reijnders and Yunus Musah.

Marco Sportiello, Luka Jovic and Luka Romero arrived on free transfers. The biggest sale was Sandro Tonali who went to Newcastle in a club-record deal.

  1. What revolution? More first team players were signed in the first year of Pioli being the coach. Also the year before that. Big revolution where most players are the same from last season.
