Sky: 29, 70% and 89 – the staggering numbers behind Milan’s injury crisis

By Oliver Fisher -

Tommaso Pobega and Noah Okafor are just the latest two in a long list of AC Milan players who have been injured in 2023, and the numbers are frightening.

As Sky (via MilanNews) report, Milan have had 29 injuries this season, a huge number especially when compared to other teams who have had very few physical problems despite playing a similar number of games.

The injury emergency at the Rossoneri has been going on for some time now and for now the solution does not seem to have been found yet. Of the 29 injuries, 70% of these were of muscular origin. In detail, 15 players suffered actual injuries like strains or tears, five were stopped by fatigue, eight had to stop due to a traumatic problem and finally there was an injury caused by inflammation.

In terms of games missed, the total is 89 games missed divided as follows: 62 missed due to injuries, 13 due to fatigue, 13 due to trauma and one due to inflammation. These are truly scary numbers which have significantly influenced Milan’s performance in this first part of this season.

With the squad at full strength, Stefano Pioli’s team were first in the Serie A table and had dominated (without winning) the first two Champions League matches. Then unfortunately the injuries started and the team’ performances worsened, as did the results, due to lack of depth and energy in the tank.

This Milan team has what it takes to be competitive both in Italy and in Europe, but they will have to resolve or at least stem the injury emergency, otherwise everything will be very difficult.
