SM Exclusive: Fabrizio Romano on Bennacer’s release clause – “At the moment he is so happy”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are not in serious discussions with Ismael Bennacer and his agent over any amendments to his contract, we have learned from Fabrizio Romano.

Calciomercato.com reported recently that Bennacer’s contractual situation does not leave Maldini and Massara calm. The deadline of 2024 is not a worry but his release clause is, because if next summer a foreign club arrives with €50million they can sign him without Milan having a say.

For this reason, the claimed a meeting in the coming weeks between the club and his entourage should not be excluded, to avoid nasty surprises and to try and adjust or remove that clause.

We spoke to Fabrizio Romano on our podcast to discuss the rumours Milan will meet with the agents of Bennacer to discuss his €50m release clause, because Maldini is worried a team like Manchester City or PSG might come along and pay that money…

“I’m told at the moment there is nothing advanced in negotiations between the agents of Bennacer and AC Milan, obviously because Milan’s priority is to work on the contracts of Donnarumma and Calhanoglu as we know, and then Romagnoli,” Romano told us.

“For sure they don’t want to lose this player, they want Bennacer to stay, it’s true there is a release clause for €50m but at the moment the player is not asking to leave. When you have a release clause you have to consider the player’s position.

“At the moment he is so happy with the club, his totally focused on coming back on the pitch so at the moment there is nothing advanced on the market side with Bennacer. Milan are happy with him, and obviously after Donnarumma and Calhanoglu they can open negotiations with Bennacer, but at the moment the total focus of the club with contract topics is with Donnarumma and Calhanoglu 100%.”
