SM: Florenzi to return to Italy for arthroscopic surgery on knee issue

By Oliver Fisher -

Alessandro Florenzi underwent a scan on his knee injury and he will return to Italy to undergo an operation, it has been confirmed.

In the 40th minute of the game against City, Florenzi went down in considerable pain and it quickly became apparent it was a knee injury that he had suffered. That left Milan sweating about his condition, fearing a potential long-term absence.

The club have confirmed to us that Florenzi underwent an MRI and specialist evaluation today which highlighted ligament and meniscal damage, with the consequent need to undergo arthroscopic surgery. In the next few days he will return to Italy to carry out the operation.

Florenzi has already had two minor knee surgeries since he joined Milan so this will be his third one, but it appears he has at least avoided the need to mend a ligament tear.

It leaves Davide Calabria as the natural option on the right side of the defence, in addition to Pierre Kalulu who can play there and younger profiles like Andrea Bakoune and Davide Bartesaghi.

The news might also accelerate Milan’s pursuit of Emerson Royal who has been mentioned as a target by virtually ever major source over the past few days.
