SM: Maignan and Loftus-Cheek suffer muscle problems – the latest

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will be without two of their key performers for at least the next game against Genoa, as their injuries were assessed today.

According to the information we have learned, Mike Maignan and Ruben Loftus-Cheek underwent scans on the muscle problems they each picked up on Saturday, the day of the 0-0 draw against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.

Just moments before the teams were due in the tunnel, news emerged that Maignan would not be starting between the posts and that it would instead be the veteran back-up Sportiello.

Now, it has been confirmed that the Frenchman has picked up an adductor strain as was being reported at the time.

Meanwhile, Ruben Loftus-Cheek has also suffered a problem which forced him off in the second half. The Englishman has a low-grade injury to his right hamstring, per what we have learned.

Both players will be re-evaluated again in one week, providing that everything proceeds as planned between now and then. The game against Genoa on Sunday will come too soon, therefore.

It means Marco Sportiello is heading for another start in goal after keeping a clean sheet against Juve, while some shuffling will be needed in midfield to cover for the absence of RLC.

  1. I think having these rumors of coach change for half a season has been very unproductive.
Both the players start caring less to impress the coach, and also the coach doesn’t put as much emphasis on growing players and cares more about the final results.

In this context, I’d hope to see more players rotated (including Pobega, Okafor, Jovic, Chukwueze or even Primavera players) but I doubt that will happen. Pioli will care only about 2nd place and getting the results, and we won’t know what they can provide until the next season friendlies start.

I really liked the focus on secrecy of the prior management despite this meaning less good rumors for us (e.g. if the rumor of Maldini wanting to sack Pioli was true, we didn’t know about it until after Maldini was sacked and the new management started leaking all types of things to make the prior management look bad)

  2. Still thinking maignan worth 100 m ? Or worth salary of 8 m a year? He is so injury prone.. as a goalkeeper he does not chase the ball for 90 minutes, he does not sliding or tackle the ball like a defender. His injury record is amazing…
