Sommer insists Inter are fired up for the derby: “A long time since we won against Milan”

Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer has admitted that he and his team-mates are motivated by how long it is since they beat AC Milan.

It’s derby day in Milano, as this evening Milan and Inter face each other for the second time this season in the Sunday night match of matchday 28 of Serie A. The red side of the city celebrated in November as Christian Pulisic scored the only goal of the game.

Bragging rights are at stake as well as three important points. The Nerazzurri are 10 points ahead of the Rossoneri in the standings and are looking for a derby win (having had none in the last six meetings) which could deal the knockout blow in the Scudetto race.

A few hours before the match, the Inter goalkeeper Sommer spoke to DAZN to discuss what could be the Swiss player’s final Milan derby, given his contract expires at the end of the season. His words have been relayed by Calciomercato.com.

Is it a feeling like the night of the second star?

“No, we don’t think so. It’s a derby, a derby is always special. And we want to win a derby; it’s been a long time since we won against Milan. We’re well prepared for the match.”

Do you know what to expect from Milan?

“I think all teams know their opponents well. For me, as a goalkeeper, it’s important to always have a good position, even when we have the ball. Then we’ll see how we do tomorrow. We also know they’re very strong on the counterattack. They’re a strong team, it’ll be an interesting match.”

How did you deal with the criticism you got earlier in the season?

“With calm (laughs). It’s part of football and life, after twenty years of this you know how it works well. I’m very calm, I always want to be a good goalkeeper for our team. The important thing is that we win matches, that we play well. Not just if I play well.”

Could it be your last derby?

“I always enjoy these games. A derby is a derby, it’s very important for the city, for the fans, for us as a team. The future is the future, I live in the moment and tomorrow [today] is the derby. I have so much fun in these games.”
