SPAL president insists Colombo is ‘ready’ for Milan: “He is going to be something special”

By Oliver Fisher -

Lorenzo Colombo is ready to return to AC Milan and get a spot in the first team, according to SPAL president Joe Tacopina.

Colombo spent last season out on loan at SPAL in Serie B last season where he scored six league goals, and the decision was made to send him to Lecce in Serie A for the current campaign so he can get some top flight experience.

The 20-year-old has made 22 league appearances for Lecce this season and he has found the back of the net four times, with two assists. One of his goals was a screamer that secured a draw away at Napoli.

Our recent update revealed that Milan are happy with Colombo’s development and will likely keep him in the first team next season given Zlatan Ibrahimovic could retire and Ante Rebic could be sold.

Tacopina spoke during an interview with The Italian Football Podcast and he was asked what impressions Colombo left from his time with the Ferrara-based club.

“He is ready for Milan. I had him last season at SPAL. I knew his talent was a different level talent. He will be a national team player soon. He was only 19 last year, only a kid. AC Milan should bring him back. He’s such a good kid, never says a dramatic word just works so hard,” he said.

“I still stay in touch with him on occasion. I tried to bring him back to SPAL ahead of this season again but he said he was going to Lecce. He is going to be something special.”

  1. In the little I have seen of him, he reminds me of Petagna with a similar build. I don’t see anything special about him.

  2. Unless he is ready to start, and Milan is ready to make him a big part of their squad, he is better off staying on loan for 1 more year in a team that will allow him to play week in week out. Younger players need to play to get better. You can’t substitute experience by sitting and watching.

  3. It’s better to trust him than signing another potential striker that’ll just be Pellegri Mk. II or Lazetic 2.0

    1. I doubt they will buy another 18-19 year old. If they spend money on the position this summer I think it will be on a “ready” player, not potential. Ibra is out and even Giroud hasn’t put pen to paper and is also not exactly a spring chicken. We need production immediately.

  4. It is well documented, we need a starting strker to arrive in summer.
If we qualify for champs league, we will need options.
Colombo has the rest of this season to continue his progress.
Next season i hope he will return home and be in the rotation with whoever we sign and Giroud (who id expect to be 3rd choice).
Colombo is a huge talent. He will do well in a good team like Milan
