Sportiello sustains calf problem with Mirante in line to start vs. Juventus

By Oliver Fisher -

There is more bad news on the injury front for AC Milan as they are set to be without Marco Sportiello for the game against Juventus, it is claimed.

It was already known that Mike Maignan will be forced to miss the game against Juventus on Sunday night after he was given a straight red card during the win over Genoa before the international break, with Sportiello in line to take his spot.

As reported by Manuele Baiocchini on Sky (via MilanNews), Sportiello has sustained a muscle problem and will almost certainly be out for the match against Max Allegri’s side at the weekend.

If he were to miss the game, then the responsibility will pass to Antonio Mirante to start between the posts for what would be his first action of the season.

Update: The club have confirmed that Sportiello has suffered a strain of the medial twin muscle of his left calf. The goalkeeper will have to observe a period of ten days of rest after which the evolution of his condition will be evaluated with a new MRI.

    1. Euro’s and AFCON, there international competitions are right around the corner. I agree these players shouldn’t be planning this much football. Teams are losing money in the long term. It is disappointing since it is a roll of the dice for every team.

    2. Sportiello didn’t play any international so that doesn’t count.

Maignan can’t play because of the red card.

So in this case I don’t think there’s any reason to blame International break.

  1. Sooooo Sportielleo who had never had a muscle injury or calf injury for that matter is all of a sudden injured. On his day off lol.
Nah, something is wrong with either the medical staff, the methods and/or the facilities incl pitches. This can’t be coincidence (I also get that he’s older but come on, it happens to younger players). Strangely some players dont seem to get injured often but overall we have a dismal injury record. Something is not right and I trust this management to handle it
