Sportitalia: Conte ‘waiting for Milan’ – the salary and signings he would ask for

By Oliver Fisher -

Antonio Conte would be willing to become the next head coach of AC Milan if a couple of guarantees are met, according to Michele Criscitiello of Sportitalia.

Conte is on the lookout for his next job after parting company with Tottenham in controversial circumstances back in March. He took the role on in November 2021, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo, but it didn’t end up being a successful marriage.

Ever since then he has been linked with various opportunities but above all it is a return to Serie A that has generated the most momentum, with several clubs perhaps eyeing up their next head coach.

Sportitalia for example reported earlier today that Conte met in person for the second time with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who is pushing to appoint him on a three-year contract, but the Italian wants to coach Milan next.

Now, their director Michele Criscitiello – a well-known journalist – spoke about the situation during a live broadcast on Twitch for OcwSport channel, with his comments relayed by PianetaMilan.

“In my opinion he would be the best coach for Milan. Conte has met De Laurentiis twice, he is worth around 7-8-9 million euros per season. He is waiting for Milan,” he began.

“Moncada and Ibrahimovic want him. Furlani, a great manager, wants check the accounts. He is the only one to convince, there are all the conditions for the Milan-Conte marriage, but it all depends on Furlani.

“Conte could ask for 4 targeted top reinforcements and 6 total signings. Milan could sell another big player in the summer, which wouldn’t scare him. Conte prefers Milan and then he has a great relationship with Ibra.

“He likes Milan a lot as a team. 7 million plus bonuses, Conte goes to Milan, but I repeat Furlani decides. At the moment, everyone and I repeat everyone, I am on Pioli’s side, but his cycle will end in June.”

  1. That’s STEEP. He’d be paid more than our Top Player. And he would ask for top signings…. I don’t see how that gets approved.

And given most our money comes from Europe, I don’t see how Conte fits this project.

    1. Our top player is precisely the one they are going to sell because Conte has no use for wingers. So bye bye Leao, and probably Chukwueze. Pulisic can play as a second striker or even a trequartista so he would stay. Bye bye just about to emerge Chaka Traore too. Sad we’re going this route. I think Motta would have been fantastic. Oh well.

  2. This is complete nonsense. I can’t believe you have management at a club talking about who the next manager is going to be while Pioli still has the job. It completely undermines his authority with the players. It’s completely disrespectful. The season isn’t even halfway over. Are they saying there is nothing he can do to keep his job? What if they somehow come back and win the Scudetto? What if they win the Coppa Italia and the Europa League? So we basically have a coach who is going to have to coach half the season knowing he is already sacked? And now the players don’t have to respect him because they know he’s going to be gone anyways.
And I am someone that was saying Pioli needs to go, but this is entirely unprofessional by management and creates an environment where there is no trust.

      1. You don’t need to do it publicly. It just creates a bad atmosphere around the club. I’ve never seen this done in any other sport. Generally if you decide you are moving on from a coach midseason, you let him go and put in an interim coach until you find your permanent replacement. Having a lame duck coach for half the season is not good for anybody, not for the coach or the players.

        1. No. That’s what ADL does. Changes coaches mid season. How is it working out for him?

I’m pretty sure everyone is on the same page about a need for a coaching change at the end of the season. Im not sure how you think this is “public”. This is all tabloids and storylines. Milan hasn’t come out and said they are looking to replace Pioli. In fact Milan isn’t saying anything at all for that matter.

          1. If they are saying Ibra and Monacada want Conte and Furlani wants someone else. Are they completely making this stuff up? Because if you are telling reporters this, that’s pretty public.

    1. What’s the difference with let’s say, a player who won’t renew but still in the team? They’re all professionals, paid to be professionals, and therefore, they should act like one. There’s nothing new in football.

      1. Not the same at all. A coach is not the same as a player. The coach needs to have authority over the players, but if they no he’s basically fired anyways, some may not be that concerned about listening to him. Also what manager wants to coach half the season knowing he is already fired? It’s just bad on so many levels.

      1. Not really. Conte didn’t finish the season out when the Spurs decided they wanted him out. Nor did Solksjaer when Man United let him go. They had an interim manager finish the season before they brought in Ten Hag. What are the instances where someone basically coaches more than half the season knowing that they are already sacked?

        1. Actually, Conte got tired of coaching the Spurs right before the season ended, after yet another particularly bad, lifeless loss by the team. So he called this press conference in which he flamed the entire Spurs team, the management, and the owners, as being just complete losers, with a built-in culture of losing.
Everything he said about the Spurs was actually true, it’s really funny, you need to find that video and watch it.
But of course, it got him fired.

          1. P.S. I looked it up. That was a post game presser in March 2023, after the Spurs coughed up a 3-1 lead to tie Southampton, who were dead last at the time (sounds a bit like Milan?).

Don Antonio’s contract with Spurs was already set to end that season, but after another week, Spurs pulled the plug early and he “left by mutual consent”

        2. Look how spurs were doing this season though before their injurys, with a less known manager and losing their best player. They playing some great football too, conte is a no for me.

  3. Motta over Conte any day.
I’ll pick the unknown over the known.
Motta has a great potential and he can grow simultaneously with the squad. The players Milan have are more suited for his style of coaching.
You’d have to sell your wingers if Conte comes in.
Conte is a one tournament coach. Sucks in Europe.
You might get immediate success in Italy but history tells us that it’s always short lived. He will burn out the players. They will tune him out after a year and a half. No one wants to listen some lunatic constantly screaming from the sidelines.
Most importantly, he will quit on you by the end of the 2nd season after he spends the previous year constantly crying, whining about players , referees or ownership. That’s what quitters do, they quit.
Let’s not forget that his Tottenham team was knocked out by Milan when Milan had hard time beating anyone during the 2023. They were awful even though they had better squad than Milan’s without scoring a single goal in 2 games.
You can’t build a project around an unstable person. Look at patterns, look at his track record. Can’t stay at a club for more than 2 years.

    1. Totally agree. If you are trying to build something for the long term Conte is not the guy. He can’t last more than 2 seasons. You may win a scudetto in one of those seasons but is it worth it? You’ll be left with a mess to clean up afterwards. Not to mention the constant complaining and the boring playstyle. Please don’t do this.

      1. Who is trying to build something for the long term, what are you babbling about? Cardinale is already looking to sell, he needs a proven coach to maybe bring the scudetto next season and raise the price further. Conte is by far the best bet for that.

        1. Looking to sell what? You speculate as much as these outlets. Looking for foreign investment is not the same as trying to offload.

          1. Gerry Cardinale bought the club to sell it for more money and make money. What is a speculation there? He said it in an interview.

          2. Token, he bought it for 1.2bn. This is Serie A. How much higher will the value of a club on this league go that would make all the work and stress make it worth it? 1.4bn? 1.5bn? You think he’s doing this for a 300m gain? And in what span of time? Does this include a stadium? Because a stadium is going to take at least 6-7 years. So how much will the club go up in value? 2bn? Man City, the top club in the top league, is valued at 1.51bn. So I’m not sure wtf you’re talking about here.

        2. Asks what I’m babbling about, then spews out pure speculative nonsense, as if he knows what Cardinale is looking to do. Ok buddy.

The game has passed Conte by, the same as it has Mourinho. But at least Mourinho was once a great coach who could win without always having the best team. If you spend a ton of money and give him the best squad in the league, then Conte will win you a trophy. Otherwise he cannot, even he knows this which is why is always complaining to management about spending more money and bringing in better players. Say what you will about Pioi, but Conte would never have won the Scudetto with the Milan squad that Pioli had. Never.

          1. Gerry Cardinale bought the club to sell it for more money and make money. What is a speculation there? He said it in an interview. Any clown who can listen knows what he is looking to do, but you 2.

I can see how much you know, Mourinho finished, Conte finished. LOL

          2. Nobody buys a club hoping to sell it for less money, genius. That doesn’t mean he has some quick flip in mind or that he doesn’t care about the long term success of the club. He’s not looking to sell he’s looking for investors so they can actually spend some more money.
And regardless of his intentions, as a fan you should be looking for a long term success, not someone who is going to leave the club a mess and in debt when he rage quits in a year and a half like Conte surely will.

    2. Where did this happen? Can you give an example where players “tune him out after a year and a half.” You are making stupid stuff up. He left Juventus, he was fired at Chelsea and he also left Inter. Had nothing to do with any players tuning him out but the board not granting him the players he wanted, so he left. Except at Chelsea, there it was a different story. The only player I know was against him is Diego Costa, name any other??? You can want Conte or be against it, but you can’t be a clown that lies.

        1. I’m not angry, I’m just amazed how stupid some people can be. You clowns can’t make me angry if you all tried, small minds don’t bother me like that.

      1. And his glorious stay at Tottenham, where all he did was whine and complain. And the players couldn’t wait for him to leave so they could start playing some real football, and are now doing much better even after losing Kane.

        1. Yep agreed. spurs was a good sign that JM and Conte are no longer elite coaches.

From a budgetary reason alone I am surprised we’re even linked to Conte.

Think the general comments section echoes my sentiment, someone like Motta (or RDZ if Brighton let him go) would be better suited. We’d play more attractive football than Contes defensive style, and be able to build a project for the next 5 years.

        2. You mean when Harry Kane agreed with Conte, that the club is falling apart and the team is not strong enough? And he left? :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Ok, great example of players being against him. You can’t make this up, you really are that stupid…

          1. It’s an example of the team being much better as soon he left, even with lesser players. The fact that you are getting so upset at everyone here just indicates that you know it’s true. A little too personal for you? Is this Conte’s son or something?

        1. You mean that players at Tottenham “tune him out after a year and a half.” and he wasn’t there for that long? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Of course, get your stupidity straight before replying.

        2. He wasn’t at the club for even 1.5 years, so that did not happen. Never happened. You don’t even know what actually happened.

      2. He is sh*t get over it

Managed all these top clubs and never even saw semi-finals of CL and you call him world class manager lmao

        1. But I would trust Ibrahimović over Boulden for the coach choice. As the club will also. That is why Conte is a candidate and nobody gives a F what you think about it. Right?

      1. Maybe, but what did Motta do? He has been trying to become a coach with his tactics and he failed at Genoa, did ok at Spezia and is now doing better at Bologna. But what would he do without the amazing signings Bologna made, and Motta had nothing to do with them?

    3. Just one more question Z, when did Conte sell all the wingers? What was Hazard or Pedro or Willian? Where did they play? I could add more. You are making too stupid things up, it is like anti-common sense what you write, random idiocy.

  4. As much as I despise Foolani, I’m with him. Of course he’s first and foremost looking for a cheaper solution but as @Z said, I’d take unknow prospect over known. Conte is stubborn, egocentric and unpredictable in his behaviour. He’s also expensive and would tear down another project in the making.

  5. If conte comes, ittl cost milan more than his value (and not only economically speaking) I could see him putting an end to what took us 4 years to build and when he leaves (if he joins i cant see him lasting more than 2 seasons) he will leave Milan in a worse state that it is now. I say no thank you

  6. My favorite part is how the same people who were so happy that Ibra came back with his winner mentality. And now think they know better than that same guy and think Ibra is an idiot because he think Conte is best choice. Love to read this… 😀

        1. And I’d love that Milan gets Conte as it means better players are coming, no more half players. And it would annoy you football geniuses so it would be perfect.

  7. I take this news as propaganda garbage which really doesn’t make any sense if it’s true.

I prefer Pioli 10x over Conte.

But why bother about this trash news anyway?

    1. Propaganda? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Whose propaganda? 🤣🤣

  8. Pls, stop bringing up this story. Milan doesn’t need Conte, He will abandon the ship in the midst of a storm. We don’t need a coach that will be demanding for more than what the club can afford. We have been able to manage our crises so far. Thanks for nothing.

  9. Conte will bring immediate trophies. However, it will ten years of rebuilding after that. The reason management love guys like Conte is that those immediate trophies help boost their own careers. They move on before the Conte collapse happens and the rebuild is needed. For Cardinale, those immediate trophies will allow him to sell the team for a huge profit.

Unfortunately, no one is thinking long-term.

  10. 6 signings, is that all? Makes me wonder whether the guy is worthy of his reputation.

Is a Scudetto worth blowing up a project that has Milan on a path to sustainable success and a return to being a top club?

I’d say it’s not but I’m prepared to wait 2 or 3 more seasons.

    1. We’ve been listening this bedtime story of “Milan getting back to where it belongs” for almost a decade now. There’s no more old AC Milan that many of us fell in love with. And AC Milan won’t get back on top until they own a debt free stadium that will generate money and make this club selfsufficient. That’s roughly another decade.

      1. 10 years ago we were still owned by Berlusconi and just beginning banter, so not sure what you’re talking about here. Banter was all about signing washed up free agents in their late 20s/early 30s for high wages. Then came the Li disaster, followed by 2 years of Elliott who didn’t want to own or run a club. Now we have a “settled” owner. His project is only 2 seasons old. They closed in 2022. Remember? This season we got a bad group in the CL and 1000 injured players. All we need is a better manager (not Conte) and on top signing at DM, and I think we challenge for the scudetto and regularly get to the CL knockouts. Oh, and amongst all this change and turmoil we did win a scudetto. How many did Ancelotti’s “world class” side win in 9 seasons? Yeah.

        1. Sacchi also won one scudetto, but he won 2 ECs playing state of the art football and a style of play that has continued to influence the top coaches today, most notably in Klopp’s Liverpool. That’s why Sacchi is remembered and his best disciple, Ancelotti has won 4 ECs are a coach, more than anyone in history, at the 2 most successful clubs in history – Real Madrid and Milan. You’re trying to diminish him? Capello won league title after league title, we only remember the 2 ECs that he lost due to stubbornness, and the one Berlusconi’s favourites, Savicevic and Desailly, won for us. Go away and learn your history.

          1. I absolutely agree on sacchi and he came from serie c team before joining us and as you already mentioned his diciple ancelotti and also mentioned klopp as one theres also pep to mention who has mentioned his style of some sort of inspiration obviously also including cruyff but still sachhi revolutionized football to this day.
I nevertheless like vero and he shouldnt go away and he also has a point about ancelottis reign even though silvios approach was always wining or cokmpeteing for cl than wining serie a it also became his demise at the club later on.

  11. As much as i would support anyone in the club when they actually are here the prospect of seeing conte on the bench sounds worse than hooking my balls up to a car battery 😀 And I really dont thing either would be smart choices 🙂

    1. Cardinale isn’t an idiot. Everyone knows what they get with Conte and his career is only heading one way, the same way as the once mighty Benitez. When you always cry about money and burn out your players, eventually people stop listening. Telling players to keep running works for Allegri because he keeps his mouth shut and doesn’t make demands on the board. Coaches like him are at an end.

      1. are you kidding me or do i misunderstand you because contes biggest succeses has been in already dominant teams, juve and chelsea comes to mind and he is pretty much guaranteed to go screaming in a year or two and bringing us back to scratch in the look for a new coach, Besides of that he will demand a revamp of our squad and will also demand a very high salary so no thanks, pleasantly said and f anything Contes career has most likely gone beyond his peak unless he is successfull in his next move.
I liked Conte the player by the way but there is zero chance that makes me want him as our coach as i im not a fan of the 3-5-2 formation.
