GdS: Strategy, stadium and a night worth €20m – Cardinale’s agenda while in Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Gerry Cardinale will be back at San Siro tonight for AC Milan’s game against Spurs in the Champions League, which forms part of an important few days.

La Gazzetta dello Sport outlines the importance of going far in the Champions League for the Milan ownership, because the competition not only represents sporting pride but also a huge financial boost too. For example, the group stage game against Chelsea brought €6.8 in box office takings, which could be higher tonight.

The Champions League is unique in terms of its ability to attract sponsors and relaunch the brand around the world, and being able to finish among the final eight in the competition could open up new business opportunities.

Cardinale bases his project on the connection between sport and entertainment and fans from all over the planet follow the top European tournament, so getting past Spurs would not only provide technical growth but a commercial one too.

It is no coincidence that Cardinale has chosen this match to return to the stadium. When counting the UEFA prize money and other income, getting past this round could and should be worth over €20m to the club.

Cardinale has been in Milan since yesterday evening. He had dinner in the city and today is going to have a long day of meetings. Before taking a seat in the stands at San Siro, he is expected in the offices of Casa Milan to meet with the management on the sporting side and the financial side too, probably at the same time.

Cardinale hasn’t been at a Milan game since the derby last September, when his presence in the stands was a lucky charm as the Rossoneri won 3-2. Five months have passed since then and a lot could change in the next five two, given the disappointing follow-up season to the Scudetto so far.

In addition to strategy meetings, the new stadium project will also be discussed by Cardinale together with president Paolo Scaroni, who follows the developments of the process on a daily basis.

Sesto San Giovanni remains on pole as an alternative site, also due to the fact the mayor there has already given availability, and that would choice that would lead to the separation from Inter and the autonomous construction of the new stadium.
