AC Milan’s issues off the pitch have been well documented, with the club’s glory years a distant memory these days.
Despite spending over €600million on players over the last five years, the club is still striving to reach the top once again. It will come one day, but when?
A sixth-placed finish in Serie A wasn’t satisfactory for many supporters, especially when you factor in the amount of money spent on relatively big names like Andre Silva, Hakan Calhanoglu, Andrea Conti, Franck Kessie, Ricardo Rodriguez, and Leonardo Bonucci back in 2017. A higher finish was expected, that’s for sure.
Stefano Pioli can’t have been happy with the end result this season either, although his future has been resolved. He has a plan, it seems. Once again, it’s another summer window Milan need to utilise effectively. Otherwise, the club runs the risk of falling even further behind the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan.
Ralf Rangnick’s potential arrival had some fans hopeful, but that appears to be off now. Milan remain some distance behind Juventus and Inter in the 2020-21 Serie A betting odds from MansionBet.
Still, some astute signings could help them mount a better challenge and Rangnick – given his CV in football – was expected to land some. For now, though, the club appears to be in the hands of Stefano Pioli as it heads into a vitally important summer.
Who should AC Milan be looking at? Which players are on the club’s radar? Here are a few potential targets below.
Fiorentina youngster Nikola Milenkovic has been catching the eye with some impressive displays for the club this campaign. The Serbian international centre-back is someone Stefano Pioli knows well and is at a good age, therefore making him a solid long-term option for the club.
Rumours of a €40million valuation by Fiorentina could put the club off, but it is an area which certainly needs strengthening. Nikola Milenkovic looks like a star in the making, so he’s a solid option for Milan.
Another Serbian centre-back, Napoli’s Nikola Maksimovic is under consideration according to numerous reports over the last few days. Seen as an ideal addition to the defence to join the rotation alongside Simon Kjaer and Alessio Romagnoli, the 28-year-old has a wealth of experience.
It could add some much-needed stability to the Milan backline. With Napoli rumoured to be valuing him at around €20million, Maksimovic certainly isn’t out of reach.
A player fans of Milan know well, Tiemoue Bakayoko is linked with a permanent move to the club this summer. The Chelsea midfielder made a good impression during his loan spell in 2018-19 and is deemed surplus to requirements at the London club after going out on loan once again to Monaco last season.
Milan and Chelsea appear to be in negotiations for a deal, although issues around the transfer fee have been rumoured. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
Milan need a game-changing addition to lift the club and its supporters. Diego Costa would certainly provide that if he were to join the side. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is reportedly pushing for a move to Milan with the player ready to leave Atletico Madrid after a turbulent time at the club. One to watch.
Milan are chasing a right-back, with the latest name to be linked with the club being PSV Eindhoven’s Denzel Dumfries. Tottenham’s Serge Aurier was an option but the young Dutchman is seen as a younger, cheaper and longer-term option.
