Telegraph: Maldini and Massara considered for Manchester United role

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are on a list of directors that Manchester United are considering hiring as the club look to go in a new direction, a report claims.

According to The Telegraph, Sir Jim Ratcliffe will soon acquire 25% of the club from the Glazers and he will take advice from Sir Alex Ferguson with a ‘radical overhaul’ planned.

Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman is being considered for a role but he is not the only figure Ratcliffe’s list. Former Tottenham Hotspur recruitment chief Paul Mitchell has been linked, while Atalanta’s Lee Congerton and Atletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta are also under consideration.

Maldini and Massara are part of the list too as per the report, with Jean-Claude Blanc – who may replace Richard Arnold as chief executive when Ratcliffe’s acquisition of shares is complete – aiming to make an ambitious appointment.

Maldini and Massara were sacked by Milan less than 48 hours after the final game of last season after failing to agree a vision for the future with owner Gerry Cardinale. Maldini was linked with a job in Saudi Arabia, but that went quiet and perhaps this is why.
