Departing clubs and uncertain future: The mad rush to visit San Siro begins

San Siro is one of the most famous and recognisable football stadiums that exists in the world at the moment, due to its sheer size and unique design.

AC Milan and Inter both call it home as they have done for close to 100 years now, but there are a lot of reports suggesting that they won’t do so for much longer because both clubs are looking to move to new stadiums.

In case you haven’t kept up with the latest developments, the technical committee of the San Donato council found no issues with Milan’s stadium project.

The club also made amendments along the way, which helped accelerate the process, and the council had no objections to the project as a whole.

In short, the ownership have made it clear that moving to a new home is a crucial step, but leaving behind a venue like San Siro will be tough.

The history

Built in and named after the San Siro district of the city, the stadium actually has the official title of ‘Stadio Giuseppe Meazza’ but it more commonly known by the area that it is in. It had at one point a seating capacity of 80,018, making it one of the largest stadiums in Europe, and the largest in Italy. However, this has been reduced a bit due to safety issues.

The San Siro is a UEFA category four stadium and it has had a number of historic games there. It hosted three games at the 1934 FIFA World Cup, the opening ceremony and six games at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and three matches at the UEFA Euro 1980.

In addition to the international pedigree, San Siro has had four European Cup/Champions League finals – in 1965, 1970, 2001 and 2016 – while it will also have the opening ceremony 2026 Winter Olympics of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in what could end up being a swansong.
